Gino Ginelli ice cream was the ultimate treat! But I rarely had it because it was my mums special treat and if I ever got to taste a bit I thought I'd won the jackpot.

If they still sold it I would be treating it the same I'm sure lol

HeartshapedFox · 13/12/2019 01:06

Reading this has made me want to make an old school trifle like my mum used to make, complete with sprinkles on top! I remember her buying a kit in a box - do they still exist?!

Loveislandaddict · 13/12/2019 07:00

Yes, I believe the trifle kits are still around.

trifle kit

Acunningruse · 13/12/2019 12:59

Marzipan fruits!
Matchmakers
'Proper' Turkish delight eg pink and yellow gelatine cubes covered in talc icing sugar rather than Fry's Grin

Margotsflounceyblouse · 13/12/2019 13:05

I remember lemon meringue pie in a tiny box kit with a sachet of powder you'd cook up in a sauce to make the lemon filling which had a little pod of lemon essence in and another sachet which might have been icing sugar to make the topping.

Also frozen concentrated orange juice in a cylindrical tub which you took out the freezer and mixed into water. At least I think it was sold as frozen concentrate. Mum might have just put orange juice in the freezer I suppose? It made a very delicious ice cold orange drink.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 13/12/2019 13:11

The little foiled cup chocolates you got in a pick and mix.
Packet orange juice from the chemist.

Marcipex · 13/12/2019 13:11

@Margotsflounceyblouse yes the lemon meringue pie filling. I was about 12 when I was allowed to do it by myself. I was so proud.
Vesta chicken supreme. The height of sophistication.

Scoobygang7 · 13/12/2019 13:25

@howls my dps work sell those in their pic n mix

HowlsMovingBungalow · 13/12/2019 13:26

@Scoobygang7 - really? I haven't seen them for years! Have some for me! Smile

f00k · 13/12/2019 13:54

A bowl of Bombay mix was present at all times during my childhood.

Mine too. I love the stuff.

My DF would always have a box of crystallised ginger at Christmas and my DM would have the proper Turkish Delight as another PP mentioned. I can still remember the smell and it just makes me think of Christmas.

We'd always have a tin of Danish biscuits too. Those lovely buttery biscuits that come in little paper cases. I bought a tin from Sainsbury's a few years ago but I haven't seen them since.

CoolShoeshine · 13/12/2019 13:55

Birds trifle mmm

TheWayOfTheWorld · 13/12/2019 13:58

@GingleJangleScarecrow I remember Tunis cake! My great-grandparents always had one at Christmas (we are talking early 80s). I would quite like to get one (if they are still around) but I worry it would spoil the fond memories.

Feduppluckingmychinhairs · 13/12/2019 17:13

@missyB1 we can still get Kimberly, mikado and coconut creams here!

Azzizam · 13/12/2019 17:21

Just remembered the pic n mix at Woolworths. Foil covered fruitellas and you could just pick all strawberry ones. Also these amazing chocolate covered caramels. Happy days.

Willow2017 · 13/12/2019 17:24

Yes to 'Berry Fruits my dad got a box every Xmas they were his favourites.
Danish biscuits too. Not much to them tbh but a Xmas treat.
Cremola foam.
Yes to lemon meringue pie box with the tiny capsule of lemon oil in it.😀
My mum.made her own trifles. I miss them cos my kids don't like custard so not worth it just for me.😣
We also made our own marzipan Fruits, love marzipan.
I remember 'Weekend' chocs too. Was a strange mix of chocs nothing else like them.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 13/12/2019 17:44

@f00k - Iceland have the traditional Dutch biscuits in the tin.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 13/12/2019 17:44

Danish sorry

Eminybob · 13/12/2019 18:41

My mum used to always make baked Alaska at Christmas. Although she used to make it with tutti frutti ice cream (does that exist any more) which I wasn’t a fan of.
Then when Haagen Dazs started making baileys ice cream she started using that instead which was yum.
Not had baked Alaska in 20+ years.

wellthatwasthat · 13/12/2019 18:56

Bring back Neapolitans, that's what I say!!!

hels71 · 13/12/2019 19:45

Jelly that had named like yippee yellow and bugaloo blue...they were opaque

Fifthtimelucky · 13/12/2019 20:25

Ooh yes, Neapolitans. Often bought as a Christmas present for my Dad in the 1970s.

One thing I was thinking about the other day was sweetbreads. I probably haven't eaten them since the 1970s. I've never seen them for sale and I've never cooked them. Must ask the butcher about them next time I go in.

Something else I used to have a lot of in the 1960s and 70s was herring roes (on toast). About 20 years I cooked some for my daughter (about 2 at the time). She was sick. I tried again a few months later. She was sick again and I've never cooked or eaten them since!

One of my favourite sweet treats when I was young were dried bananas. Not banana chips, but long brown sticky things. I always thought they smelled of silage, but I loved them. I occasionally buy them at the health food shop but they're not as good (or sticky) as they used to be.

MontanaSky · 13/12/2019 21:04

80s child here - Sara Lee Pecan Danish Pastry. It came frozen and tasted amazing!
M&S used to do a version but haven't seen it sold in at least the past decade.

The little foil chocolate cups I've found in the Olde Sweet Shops in their pick n mix selection.

As for Danish butter biscuits, I bought a tin recently for Xmas but we've tucked into them. They were bland and didn't taste as good as they used to.

Whistle73 · 13/12/2019 23:25

I baked a Tunis cake recently for my father-in-law's birthday. I had never heard of it before but he had said it was his favourite. He was overjoyed! (I used the Mary Berry recipe).

Pipandmum · 13/12/2019 23:33

@Margotsflounceyblouse yes yes I remember the frozen cylinders of concentrated fruit juice!

GingleJangleScarecrow · 14/12/2019 10:15

I think it was called "Florida" frozen orange juice - very exotic but I doubt it had been anywhere near Florida.
