Christmas songs that are actually brilliant

And that you like as songs in their own right?

Controversial but my first choice is Fairytale of New York. Poignant and raw. Shattered dreams, unhealthy codependency Grin. Also a gorgeous melody and good arrangement (for 1987!)

My other choices are:

Just for Now by Imogen Heap

and

River by Joni Mitchell

Ideally i'd like a substantial playlist i can stick on when i've heard "Merry Christmas Everybody" one time too many. All suggestions welcome Smile

All I Want for Christmas is a great song. My favourite is Christmas Wrapping though.

FaithInfinity · 08/12/2019 20:50

I love All I want for Christmas is you! Also Michael Ball’s version of Oh Holy Night. That Leona Lewis one is catchy.

I really love River by Joni Mitchell. It’s so haunting, I’ve had dark times when I wished I could skate away! Reminds me it’s not great for everyone at Christmas.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 08/12/2019 20:50

Jethro Tully had some great songs

Solstice Bells
A Christmas song
Another Christmas song

RexDangerVest · 08/12/2019 20:50

Power of love 💔

Fairytale of New York

Stop the Cavalry - makes me think of my grandfather. Same with Pipes of Peace.

O Holy Night sung by Bryn Terfel

Dear Jessie by Madonna.

peoplearepeople · 08/12/2019 20:59

Corey Taylor - xmas

Also love power of love by Frankie goes to hollywood and have always had a soft spot for A spaceman came travelling. Blush

“Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas” the Judy Garland version.
So depressing I switch it off almost every time.

The message is basically “We’re having a shit Christmas, all the good people are dead, father’s away in the war and we’re just plodding along” .

BUT it sums up the melancholy that tinges Christmas for so many.

Cee Lo Green did a Christmas album with some great covers of Christmas songs (including River, which is one of the best songs ever let alone Christmas songs ever)

First heard this when Chris Evans did Radio 2 breakfast show, and Moira Stewart introduced a daily golden oldie.

Its beautiful!

Scarlet Ribbons by Harry Belafonte

XXMansplainShieldActive · 08/12/2019 21:18

Agree Little St. Nick by the Beach Boys
I love Chuck Berry's version of Run Run Rudolf
Lonely this Christmas by Elvis
and yes Baby it's cold Outside (reminds me of Elf!)
but best is Fairytale of NY

Loveislandaddict · 08/12/2019 21:22

socks

Heard this record recommended on the radio. It’s full of superb, new Christmas songs - a real mixture of songs. The singer is a country singer, but the songs aren’t country as such.

Well worth a listen.

Warm This Winter by Gabriella Cilmi because it reminds me of DH - he once was working security at a festival she was performing (she was about 17 at the time) and her management had buggered off without her. DH drove her to her b&b and she was apparently really nice, reminded him of his niece. So we always had a soft spot for her.

Thank God It's Christmas by Queen is ace. But our most played this year is Sparkle & Shine from Nativity!

Ginandgingers92 · 08/12/2019 21:35

Wombling merry Christmas and Britney- my only wish this year. 😂😂 genuinely, and embarrassingly both my favourites!

Stabbitha · 08/12/2019 21:37

Forget December by Something Corporate.

Stabbitha · 08/12/2019 21:39

Also love driving home for Christmas and Santa baby.

ScouseQueen · 08/12/2019 21:41

2000 Miles by the Pretenders.
Then, years later, Annie Lennox did the most wonderful Christmas album on her own called A Christmas Cornucopia.

LolaDabestest · 08/12/2019 21:57

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/12/2019 22:12

Christmas Wrapping

Carol of the Bells

Girl in a Sportscar ( not a Christmas song but Chris Evans played it loads and it stuck in my head ) Chris Rea

spub · 08/12/2019 22:16

Tracey Thorn has a fabulous Christmas album called Tinsel and Lights. It's a mix of original and cover songs, I believe. The first song on it is called Joy and it always makes me cry. Brilliant songs from start to finish Xmas Smile

RuffleCrow · 09/12/2019 06:36

Quite a lot of songs to chase up today that i've never even heard before. And lots of old favourites too - always had a soft spot for Mariah and East 17. Thanks all and keep em coming Smile
