Supper/Dinner whatever you call it!! I want to start a tradition where we have the same thing for our Christmas Eve Meal each year and get the kids all excited for going to bed and all that!! So what sort of thing do you all have?!!

We generally have picnic/nibbles/snacks - nice ham/cold meats, open the Christmas Cheese, a few 300 pigs in blankets, crisps & dip etc. Easy and not too much fuss. It’s not set in stone and if the kids turned around and said they wanted chicken nuggets & tomato sauce then we’d probably do it for them (and have all the nice cheese/food for us).

Xmas eve was traditionally a fast day (Catholic) so growing up we would have fish pie. This year we are hosting and I’m doing roast salmon, much easier!

Spied · 05/12/2019 21:22

Planning on lunch out at the local child friendly chain pub.
Dinner will be buffet-style pizza, sausage rolls, mini dessert etc.

DuggeesWoggle · 05/12/2019 21:24

I always like to have fish pie on Christmas Eve as you can make it in advance, freeze it and there's not much to do apart from chuck it in the oven and do some veg if you really want. It feels really festive too, especially with a glass of fizz or nice white wine. Either had in laws/sil at ours or been at theirs for the last few years and they are either veggie or don't like fish so had to do something else but it's just us this year so might resurrect the fish pie tradition.

Baked cheese, small roast new potatoes, cured meats, pickles. Champagne

merryhouse · 05/12/2019 21:59

We have a Provencal tradition called treize desserts

three fresh fruits (grapes, pomegranate, satsumas)
three dried fruits (apricots, dates, figs)
three nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts, brazils)
three made things (cinnamon stars, shortbread, Viennese truffles)
and a centrepiece (Christmas pudding)

It’s always hot pork sandwiches... it’s a tradition in our family we used to go to my grandparents for them, now we go to my moms and she adds a few extras like mini sausages and sausage rolls, but it wouldn’t be Christmas Eve without them!

3littlemincemeatpies · 05/12/2019 22:09

Christmas begins for us once we order the Chinese, all the hard work is done, candles are lit, excited bathed children in their new pyjamas, music on, quite a party atmosphere and DH will go and pick it up as I open us up a nice bottle red and make sure the carol playlist and champagne are ready for the morning.

Bloody love Christmas Eve!!!

Fishcakey · 05/12/2019 22:12

We've done lasagne for years.

Doubleraspberry · 05/12/2019 22:13

We used to do a ham but now we live by the sea we have a giant platter of shellfish.
Lobster, crab, whelks, oysters, prawns, langoustines, and extra mussels for the kids. Crusty bread, butter and mayonnaise, with champagne to drink.

makingmiracles · 05/12/2019 22:22

Chinese. Stems from cooking mince one year for a spag Bol which had turned despite being in date, stank the house out and we had to resort to takeaway. Was so much easier so it the next became the norm for Xmas eve, there’s 6 of us so we order loads of different dishes and have a big Chinese feast- nobody really eats bf on Xmas day and lunch is late in the afternoon so it keeps everyone going till then!
Some years we also do a Xmas day out so we decide what we’re ordering before we go and ring and order before leaving the attraction and it’s ready to pick up once back in home town, very easy!

MyDcAreMarvel · 05/12/2019 22:29

Chinese takeaway here too.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 05/12/2019 22:58

Usually Chinese, however they are usually closed on a tuesday so this year might have to settle for a curry. Hoping they just swap the Tuesday and weds 🤞

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/12/2019 22:59

A sandwich at work.
Not sure what DH and the dc will have.

drspouse · 05/12/2019 23:00

Fish (usually with a parmesan crust), wedges, green veg, and rice pudding afterwards!

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 05/12/2019 23:00

This might sound crazy, but my DS2 was always fascinated with the Japanese Tradition of KFC for Christmas. So many years ago we started our tradition of getting KFC on Christmas Eve.

drspouse · 05/12/2019 23:01

I had no idea yes
I like fried chicken but NOT KFC. So we won't be doing that.

jelly79 · 05/12/2019 23:26

@Doubleraspberry JUST WOW!!! that sounds incredible x

Saltnpepper5 · 06/12/2019 00:00

@Doubleraspberry
That's sounds bloody lovely!

Redwinestillfine · 06/12/2019 00:06

Usually too full, chocs and a few sausages? Christmas dinner is like dinner and tea all rolled into one.

Redwinestillfine · 06/12/2019 00:10

😂 it's too late clearly. I read it as Christmas and was amazed at all the posters who were so hungry after Christmas dinner!!! On Christmas Eve take out or ready meals, curry or 🍕 as long as no cooking is involved!

SingingSands · 06/12/2019 00:13

Chinese takeaway!

MotherHeggy · 06/12/2019 00:15

Whatever we've got in the cupboard/fridge/freezer.
Usually just something on toast for me.
