What do you fancy?
Without outing myself I usually do :
Sausages, home made puff pastry savouries
Crisps and nuts
Chips for kids
Cake and pudding
Cheese and biscuits
Mini pizza / satay sticks
Chocolates for kids to sneak off with (they appear and disappear with handfuls )

This year I fancy doing either:
Hot meat sandwiches
Halloumi for non meaty people like me
Coleslaw
Chips

Or
Curry or chilli
Jacket potatoes

Plus puddings
Can’t be arsed with trad buffet but the above is boring me, if easy
What are you serving or what would you like?
Drinks- mulled wine and fizz, beer, fizz of some sort for children- Appletise or juice and fizzy water and whatever people bring
I love the party and enjoy cooking but want to mix it up a bit - and it’s steady flow of people for a few hours so I want it to require little intervention so I can have a drink with my lovely friends Smile

Sausage rolls! Can’t have a buffet without sausage rolls

Villagegreenpreservation · 03/12/2019 21:32

Oh yes. Usually make a plate of those too
Just can’t decide what route to take

Curry and rice. Delicious

TheLittleBrownFox · 03/12/2019 21:36

Slow cooker casseroles maybe? My friend borrowed about 100 several and did a help yourself as and when type of thing. I still dream about the sweet potato, coconut and peanut butter one Grin

I'd lie something fresh like salad in the mix - buffets are often all beige, and especially given that the next day everybody will be getting stuffed full, some greenery or something light would be fab in my opinion :)

Amys136 · 03/12/2019 21:37

I think a stew would go down well. It’s hearty and warming then do loads of French bread for mopping up. Plus any leftovers can be frozen for a quick dinner later on in the festive period

Villagegreenpreservation · 03/12/2019 21:42

I have two slow cookers.
Loving stew and bread idea
Hit me with your best stew recipes please
Slow cooking or oven as I can transfer to keep warm!

CaptainGT · 04/12/2019 11:24

It's a christmas eve buffet

Pigs in blankets
Mince pies
Pate and toast

SuperSange · 04/12/2019 11:29

From a slow cooker, any stew, curry or chilli will be fantastic. I do t have recipes as such but you can buy slow cooker Schwartz sachets. The slow cooker chicken curry is lush.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 04/12/2019 11:30

DH and I are having hot smoked salmon, pate, cheeses and naice bread. The kids are having fish and chips. There will probably be hot chocolate and popcorn.

PurpleDaisies · 04/12/2019 11:33

I’m vegan now but Jamie Oliver’s hunters chicken stew (with added sausages) is dead easy and really good.

I’d do Indian. A curry, naan, bhajis, samosas, pakoras, poppadums, chutney and pickles.

anonnancy · 04/12/2019 11:44

We do all sorts!

Cold bits:
Quiches
Pork pie
Cheese board
Cold meat platter
French stick with butter
Crudités
Crisps and nuts
Olives
Sausage rolls
Pâtés

Hot bits:
Jacket pots
Chilli
Curry
Beef stew/casserole
Rice (for curry or chilli)
Chips (if people didn't want jacket pot with chilli)
Indian snack platter (Bhaji/samosas etc)
Pizzas and garlic bread
Pulled pork and stuffing cobs
Pigs in blankets

Puddings:
Mince pies
Home made cookies
Trifle
Chocolate fudge cake
Sticky toffee pudding
Ice cream

All hot meals can be made in a slow cooker too for ease!

And then lots of alcohol of course! X

Anything that isn’t brown. Buffets are always very very brown and beige.

Fresh fruit and veg would be a welcome change at christmas.

f00k · 04/12/2019 12:02

I don't know why OP but I giggled at the possibility if you being outed by your buffet selection Grin

I usually do
Cocktail sausages
Sausage rolls
Kettle chips
Twiglets
Selection of dips with crudités
Cold meat platter
Cheeseboard & crackers
Warm rolls
Nuts
Chocolates

I sometimes do a glazed ham but I find that most of it gets left once we've loaded ourselves with other stuff. It's nice to have the leftovers on Christmas Day but it just seems like a faff when we're not that fussed about it.

MoonlightBonnet · 04/12/2019 12:05

I also giggled at the idea of being outed by that very generic buffet selection, eaten by approximately 4 million Britons every Christmas Eve.

Is it just your family or are you having guests?

Cleanfreshbedding · 04/12/2019 12:08

I do a huge ham then cook those part baked rolls to have warm from the oven with the (still warm) ham. Cheese board and quality street and accompaniments.

Villagegreenpreservation · 04/12/2019 12:32

I made it generic as my actual food items would be recognised - I'm all about the mystery GrinWink
I'm loving the ideas and now starving!!

OP posts:
newdeer · 04/12/2019 12:42

I'd want
a big cheeseboard with lots of different ctypes of crackers, fresh figs and grapes and chutneys
lots of salty, savoury snacks, like cheese straws, kettle chips and veg crisps, olives and fancy roasted nuts with herbs
mince pies
chocolates
An entire crate of clementines for me and a fruitbowl for everyone else
walnuts in shells
little lebkuchen with that fine frosted icing
Lots of fresh stuff - crudites and a big green salad and cherry tomatoes with fresh thyme
Maybe cocktail sausages tossed in honey and grain mustard or pigs in blankets
Maybe a ham with crusty bread and piccalilli
Marzipan sweets

Cauliflowerpower · 04/12/2019 12:50
