Mince pies, best, worst or fancy flavours?

Morning.
I’ve only had Morrisons ‘The Best’ ones so far. They aren’t. There’s too much filling to pastry which isn’t all that crisp. The filling is a bit too sweet and sour without actually tasting of much.

I’m going to try to get some more today. Any opinions?

@BeyondMyWits omg yes! Are they the same as last year's? I couldn't stop eating them Grin

BeyondMyWits · 01/12/2019 17:10

Yes they are !!

PersonaNonGarter · 01/12/2019 17:12

The Waitrose plum and ginger ones really are tasty.

I like the Waitrose lemon ones with crumble topping but they are a bit big.

M&S ‘The Collection’ ones are very good.

QueenOfOversharing · 01/12/2019 17:48

@BeyondMyWits I just started doing keto, but I am having those over Christmas!

QueenOfOversharing · 01/12/2019 17:49

@PersonaNonGarter I like the Waitrose lemon ones with crumble topping but they are a bit big.

What? Too big? That's not even possible. Lol.

CherryPavlova · 01/12/2019 17:50

Homemade only.
Crumble topped, marzipan topped, orange flavoured pastry, nutty ones, ordinary ones.
Shop bought are never quite the same.

MsMoodyMare · 01/12/2019 17:57

Either the Morrisons mini mince pies (tiny so go straight in my gob whole) or the Mr Kipling iced mince pies, drooling just thinking of them Grin

nocoolnamesleft · 01/12/2019 17:59

Looks like I'll have to try the Morrisons ones...I'm always complaining that there isn't enough mincemeat to pastry.

Mustbetimeforachange · 01/12/2019 18:01

Heston lemon ones with crumble topping. I don't usually agree with messing with a mince pie, but these are my exception

Coldhandscoldheart · 03/12/2019 09:59

Sainsbury’s bakery puff pastry ones, quite nice, not over sweet, but still feel the mincemeat slightly lacking.

Co-Op ones were surprisingly nice. Nothing compares to home-made, but sometimes I just can't be bothered. Mainly because no-one else in the house eats them.

Eminybob · 03/12/2019 10:07

I’ve only tried the Aldi specially selected and the Sainsbury’s taste the difference so far this year, and Aldi were my fave.
I’ve stopped buying the different flavoured or topped ones as they are never as nice as the original. Last year I had some frangipane topped ones, and salted caramel crumble ones, which both sound like they would be delicious but just didn’t have enough mincemeat to make them proper mince pies imo.
I bloody love mince pies.

Cineraria · 03/12/2019 10:14

Lidl's mince pies are milk, egg and soya free if anyone needs that. Nothing fancy though.

Roussette · 03/12/2019 10:15

Agree with Cointreau

I am really really fussy about mince pies. Because if I have a mince pie I want it to be delicious because I'm not mad keen on them unless they are.

The best I've tasted are Co-op ones. They are like the Mary Berry ones I occasionally make.

Greggs ones are gorgeous, I usually manage to eat the lot within 48 hours. It's a good job I have to go into town to get them! 🐷

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 03/12/2019 10:30

Aldi frangipane ones for sure!! I also tried the aldi sloe gin mince pies but they didn't really taste that different to me..

Wallabyone · 03/12/2019 11:01

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference ones are delicious this year-I have bought the mini ones (they have a star on top) and they are so good. We live in Herts and have Simmons the bakers around here, their mince pies are also brilliant.

WinifredTorrance · 03/12/2019 11:05

I have always HATED mince pies but...I bought some M&S ones for my husband and now I’m as far as Father Christmas, solely from a diet of mince pies. Xmas Blush

They have to be the ‘Collection’ ones in the gold box, though.

Janedownourlane · 03/12/2019 20:08

Thomas the Bakers mince pies are delicious, but think you have to be oop North to get them!

stringbean · 03/12/2019 21:36

The answer to decent mince pies is to make your own mincemeat - it's dead easy (try Delia's recipe) - once tasted, you will never go back to shop bought!!

guineapig1 · 03/12/2019 21:40

So far this year I’ve sampled the Aldi black forest crumble ones and the Aldi sloe gin mince tarts - both were good. I’m going to try the frangipane ones next.

My gran used to make mince pies laced with cointreau with meringue tops. This thread has reminded me that I keep meaning to dig out the recipe

stringbean · 03/12/2019 21:42

And then make Mary Berry's mincemeat streusel (again, dead easy - use bought pastry). I am rubbish at baking and even I can make this!

UrsulaPandress · 03/12/2019 22:01

Make my own mincemeat Shortbread. It’s lush.

Serin · 03/12/2019 22:10

UrsulaPandress
Would you mind sharing the recipe for mincemeat shortbread, I would love to try that.
