Something to read... 5 year old DS

I wondered if anyone had any book suggestions for 5yo DS. We are trying to stick with want/ need/ wear/ read and I'm stuck at this one.

He's on level 6 of Oxford reading tree - but please NO Biff, Chip and Kipper - I may cry.

He likes Rugby, cricket, football and motor racing. Only watched Paw Patrol or Cbeebies. We've never got into Disney. He's starting to enjoy chapter books at bedtime. We've read George's marvellous medicine (slightly abridged) and Esio Trot to him. But I'd like something we could read together as I'm keen to carve out some time for him outside of shared time with his sisters.

Any ideas really welcomed

My dc enjoyed the Pierre the Maze Detective books last year at that age. They aren't very text heavy. They also got a lot out of Maps by Alesandra Mizielinska (not much reading involved though).

Horrid Henry? My son enjoyed them and they are well written and quite funny.

My 6 yo loves Sam Copeland's Charlie Books, he finds them really funny.

Also you can't beat Charlie and The Chocolate Factory or BFG.

Just William?

Some my 6yr old has enjoyed these when just starting out with chapter books....

-My Fathers Dragon trilogy - these are really great little books
-Stuart Little
-James and the Giant Peach
-Magic Treehouse Books
-Jeremiah in the Dark, Dark Woods

Oh also

The Mercy Watson books were a great bridge - more text but still bright beautiful pictures - along with a funny narrative. They are by Kate Dicamillo

I also read the Worst Witch books to my boys at that age and both enjoyed them.

Mercy Watson is good and we've just got My Father's Dragon. However, what really got my 5yo DS's interest in reading for himself was the project X alien adventures series which start at reading band 7 so might be ready to start by Christmas (DS loves them so much that he'll read more difficult texts than he'd normally have the patience for). The first series (31 books) is currently £13 on the book people website which is a bargain.

The Christmasurus by Tom Fletcher is great!

I bought it for my ds when he was 6 & he really enjoyed it!

Captain Underpants was a huge hit here
Fact books (Usborne lift the flap ones) were also good
