Christmas cake decoration ideas

My best friend and I made our cakes together yesterday. We will have another drunken enjoyable afternoon decorating the things just before Christmas.

We are both quite arty, but bad at this. Past few years I’ve tried tasteful white snowflakes (cutter) on a white back ground with gold stars that was ok but difficult to see and the year before I went a bit mad with holly leaves and berries all over. That was a lot of green icing...

So has anyone got any simple but effective ideas for this year that I can pinch?

I use royal icing on mine as don't like fondant so a well placed snowman or polar bear looks pretty good on mine, but I've also used Christmas tree decs (mini ones) on them and even mini crackers to good effect - I'll try and find some pics .....

I am a fan of the traditional peaked white icing with plenty of those old-fashioned plastic decorations....a little cottage, a Father Christmas, a deer and a fir tree.

I LOVE THEM! Also some of those hard silver balls. YES!

Robins

I do the snowflakes mentioned above but on a coloured icing. This year DH has offered to do it.

My mum always used to do peaked white royal icing with plastic decorations. Maybe I should go retro.

The robins are lovely but I'm not fond of all that blue.

These are my last couple of years’ offerings. A lot of fondant involved and I just don’t like it as much as royal icing. I am very persuaded to go traditional this year.

I thought I’d update with this years offering. Went royal icing and Lidl decorations.

These are so smart! Mum uses to do the spikey hard icing that could break your teeth and my sister makes little marzipan scenes - she once made one of the whole family!

I have (drum roll) just put my cake in the oven and haven’t really thought about decoration! (Yes I’m just bragging that I actually made the cake!)

Lovely end result. Royal icing is so nice compared to the rolling kind.

I'll be royal icing mine flattish and adding ribbon so it looks like a wrapped present as I have left it too late to ice it and then decorate by piping, I think.
