Talk to me about panettone

Just that really! I’ve never had it and am intrigued!😋

Panettone is a dry, not very flavoursome cake-like bread and is made with raisins and dried fruit, and sometimes nuts and currants. The supermarket stuff isn’t that great. When it’s made properly and eaten fresh — and good Lord, is it laborious to make properly — it is a completely. Different. Food.
Personally, I don’t eat it as it comes - I usually turn it into something else like trifle, bread pudding, or french toast.

PinkDaydreams · 16/11/2019 13:12

Oh how disappointing! I was thinking it’s like a brioche, soft, moist and delicious! Sounds like I’m not missing out then

I hate the fruit version. I buy the chocolate chip one and put it in in the oven before we eat it. It's a game changer.

SoupDragon · 16/11/2019 13:15

I've only ever had it from a supermarket (Waitrose usually if that makes a difference!) and have always been disappointed too.

DramaAlpaca · 16/11/2019 13:15

It's not as nice as it sounds or looks. It's a soft, slightly sweet bread, usually with bits of dried fruit in it. Terribly overrated IMO. Disclaimer - I've only had an Aldi version.

AwkwardSquad · 16/11/2019 13:15

If you get a good quality one, it’s lovely, but the good ones aren’t cheap. Try one from a decent Italian deli.

greyspottedgoose · 16/11/2019 13:16

I slice and toast it and it's lovely

Beacauseisaidso · 16/11/2019 13:17

I love it! Try for yourself OP

muddledmidget · 16/11/2019 13:18

An Italian friend of mine told me to have it with chocolate spread, its amazing, even better if the bread is slightly warm

PinkDaydreams · 16/11/2019 13:19

Oh my goodness, warmed up! Now that does sound good, especially smeared with chocolate!

Eusebi deli in Glasgow make the most delicious one. DH brings one home every December and we eat it toasted with lashings of salted butter [santa]

CointreauVersial · 16/11/2019 13:23

Eaten cold, it's underwhelming.

But cut into thick slices, toasted, and spread with lavish amounts of salted butter - now that's a different thing entirely. Deeelicious! We usually polish off a couple over the Christmas period.

msmith501 · 16/11/2019 13:25

I disagree with much of the comments here. This shop www.valvonacrolla.co.uk/store-cupboard/panettone-panforte-and-torrone do really delicious and moist ones - chocolate and the lemon ones are lovely. Supermarket ones tend to be dry but the shop in the link make them fresh daily.

sebashocked · 16/11/2019 13:27

I live in Italy so surrounded by the bloody stuff. Always looks fab. Always a massive disappointment. Toasted is slightly better but it lacks the buttery indulgence of brioche or other enriched sweet bready things.

champagneandfromage50 · 16/11/2019 13:31

We love Panettone, we get ours from a deli though and wouldn’t touch supermarket ones. We have it warm. Lovely with a black coffee

Autumntoowet · 16/11/2019 13:32

I can’t deal with it.
It is another example at how brilliantly Italy markets her products for export.
I never had a slice when I lived there.
Ok if it is give. To you and there is nothing else to eat in the house and you can dip it in something.
People buy it because it is cheap yet looks fancy.
I can’t.

Majorcollywobble · 16/11/2019 13:36

Saw the M&S Christmas ad last night - chocolate topped pannetone which looked moist as it was cut and eaten .
Maybe that’s a good one ?
Others I’ve bought have hung about forever in the box till used as a trifle base .
Lidl do stollen - the stollen bites are lovely .

ChateauMyself · 16/11/2019 13:37

(Good) pannettone is the love child of cake and bread.

NaomiFromMilkShake · 16/11/2019 13:44

Majorcollywobble

That was probably covered in olive oil or something similar, for food styling purposes.

I used to work for a firm with a food development kitchen, you would not believe the tricks they used to use.

dadap · 16/11/2019 13:44

Would you recommend the ones from Carluccios ?- we have the lemon one ready for Xmas

purplepalace · 16/11/2019 13:56

I got a gorgeous one from Aldi, was delicious with lashes of salted butter! would be even better warmed up it toasted I imagine

princessbear80 · 16/11/2019 14:00

I love it, even the cheap ones! Blush

Usually eat it straight out of the box - I.e. room temp with nothing on it. But I may try it toasted with butter this year after reading this thread. If I eat it at all, I’m avoiding carbs as I’m a total carb addict.

Musicalstatues · 16/11/2019 14:03

Costco sell an amazing chocolate chip one.

I usually make this with it though rather than eating it as is.

QueenOfOversharing · 16/11/2019 14:11

@dadap YES! Carluccio ones are great!

I, personally, loooooove panettone. I like it dipped in hot chocolate.

But, as PPs said - buy a good quality one.

RockinHippy · 16/11/2019 14:43

I second the chocolate version warmed up. I'm not a big cake eater & don't have a sweet tooth, but because Pantone isn't sickly sweet, I love it.
