What she wants versus what I want her to get!

Dd10 has no device yet so is always on my phone.
I was thinking if getting her an i touch for Christmas and do think she will love it.
She said today she wants a hover board because a neighbor was out on one.

I’m so torn
It’s probably her last year for Santa
Her birthday isn’t until September.

What would ye do?

Chances are she will change her mind.
My DD has changed her mind about what she would like lots of times over these last few weeks.
I'd also stop allowing her to use you phone so often. That way she will see the benefit of having her own device.

CileyMayRhinovirus · 24/10/2019 17:20

I'd get her the I touch thing as a family present and the hover board from Santa if I could afford to.

If not, I'd probably try to find a cheaper screen item, and get the hover board from Santa.

Santa is the priority, though

Knittedfairies · 24/10/2019 17:30

I second restricting her access to your phone; at the moment she doesn't need one herself as she's got yours!

WagtailRobin · 24/10/2019 20:25

Would it put you in financial hardship to get her both because one item is what she has asked Santa for and the other is an item you think she would benefit from? I personally would get both but only if you could afford it.

A surprise iTouch would go down really well alongside her Santa gift.

Longbarn5 · 24/10/2019 21:54

You could have a look at Music Magpie website and get a second hand Itouch and then the hover board i
If she still wants one. I got my I phone from them for en excellent price and is been excellent.

Whoops75 · 24/10/2019 22:51

I agree Santa is the priority

I’ll see about getting a cheaper device and can upgrade it next year.
Thanks

Can you go to a shop where she could have a go on tablets? Do any of her friends have tablets? She only wants the hoverboard because she's seen the neighbour on it. If she sees someone using an itouch/ has a go on one she might change her mind. Worth a try.

toomuchfaster · 25/10/2019 09:43

IMO, santa is not a priority. You can only afford one item, buy what you think. Encourage her to ask Santa for something small.

ysmaem · 25/10/2019 09:48

Can you not suggest an I touch? If she's still adamant she wants a hoverboard after your suggestion then you've got your answer

BrokenWing · 25/10/2019 10:20

ds wanted a hover board, but when I explained to him they are illegal on public pavements (true), and the police could tell you to get off and walk home with it and as his parent I would be the one to get into trouble (not true), so he would really only be able to use in the garden he decided against one.

If she is starting secondary school next year and needs a phone then (dons hardhat for MN backlash) I would get her a phone with restrictions rather than an iTouch as the iTouch will become redundant very quickly.

bookmum08 · 25/10/2019 10:35

As someone has already said it's illegal to ride them on pavements and in places like parks. So unless you have a two mile long driveway it's a bit pointless. Yes the neighbour has one but not everyone follows the law! Tell your daughter this.

Whoops75 · 25/10/2019 12:16

Not getting a phone until she’s 12.
Think Santa will get the i touch its the better gift.

Maybe I’ll put a voucher in her stocking towards a hover board and suggest relatives get her vouchers too.

I could get both but it’s a lot and more than most get. I’m sure that most of her friends will get one big gift not two.
I think Santa needs to be equal when possible.

How about a kindle fire? They're great and much cheaper than an iTouch

giggly · 26/10/2019 00:55

I thought Apple had stopped making i touch. My dd got one before getting a phone and they loved them. However if they are not making them any more or planning on stopping production then she’ll not get updates on them . I saw a couple in Game for £60 a few weeks ago and looked in good nick.

LoonyLunaLoo · 26/10/2019 20:11

DS is 10 and has a hoverboard and an Iphone and the phone is far more useful. The hoverboard can only be ridden when it’s dry and it hardly ever is in this country 😂. He put his birthday money from other people towards it as he had something different from us (and I can’t remember what!)
