Vouchers for food outlets - too dodgy?

Nephew just gone to uni, was going to buy him a voucher for Pizza Express so he could treat himself to a meal out - obviously won't be buying Pizza Express vouchers now. Don't really like giving cash. Can't decide whether to continue with the idea and buy e.g. Nando's, or have a complete rethink. Appreciate none of you have crystal balls (well most of you!) just wondered what your thoughts are while I'm dithering about it.

I wouldn’t. Give him cash that’s what he wants and needs!

If nothing else I'd wait until just before you need to give it to him to see if anyone else has issues.

I have a vague idea that some of the gift cards that can be used all over the high street include food outlets. That might make you feel less worried? Or depending on where he lives I think you can get shopping centre gift cards which work the same way so if it's somewhere with a big shopping centre that could be an option.

I meant wait to buy it until just before. Sorry, hungover and can't type clearly!

@AppleKatie I know what you mean, but when my DS was a student, someone gave him a food voucher and he loved it because he didn't feel guilty going out for a meal and thought it a real treat. Will look at the multi-outlet options, there is a big shopping centre where he's at uni but not sure if I can order the vouchers online.

Nando's idea is good. They're performing really well from a business POV too.

Two things to consider - if there is a branch of your chosen outlet in this university town.

Also, going out for a meal is a social experience. No fun if his mates can’t afford to go too. Maybe Costa/Starbucks might be better than somewhere that does bigger meals.

Thanks @BikeRunSki, he's in a big city but still would check. But now I think I'll go for the voucher I linked to earlier which covers multiple outlets. And voucher will cover 2 meals so he could take a friend if no-one else wanted to pay. But god points.
