Looking for a gift for my nephew.
He's a bright little boy and quite interested in rocks/geodes.

Has anyone seen any good rock related gifts?

I'd like to spend under £20 .

LongtimeLurker29 · 09/10/2019 12:05

What about a rock tumbler?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/10/2019 12:08

Geode make and break set?
Geological specimen set?
Lots on amazon, Nat Geo, Science Museum sites.

Search Ebay for Crystals, or Geodes, there's loads of them! Good luck. Xmas Smile

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/10/2019 12:12

Or Geology Today / Rockwatch membership / subscription?

Are stones similar enough to rocks?

I am getting DS a bag of stones, a book about how to paint them, some fine pens and some setting spray/varnish type stuff.

Crystal kits tend to be disappointing. Is it just rocks or also fossils? My 8 year old started a fossil collection this summer and loves it

WhoWants2Know · 09/10/2019 20:14

Fossils are quite affordable on eBay, as are geodes, tumbled stones and agate slices

You can also get wonderful illustrated books to help identify different kinds of rocks and gems. The Works might be a good place for that.

Hi OP,
Have a look at the online shop of the Natural History Museum. They have quite a few rock-related bits and bobs there that may give you some ideas.

Stompythedinosaur · 10/10/2019 00:12

My 8yo has been obsessed with rocks for ages. She loves a little set of fossils I bought her on Amazon last year. She is also hankering after a geode (a decorative one, we have had the sets you can open yourself before and they were disappointing).

If there is anyone you can get a joint present with, then dd loves her rock tumbler (although it is noisy she the parents may not love it) but they are over your budget.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 10/10/2019 20:28

My DS was into rocks and loved the grow your own crystal he got at that age.

Tiggles · 11/10/2019 06:48

Look up jurassic Jim on Facebook. Every day he puts up a selection of different rocks or fossils at bargain prices (or if you happen to live on the Isle of wight he has a shop there). I bought my rock loving ds a wooden storage box from Amazon last year and filled it with cheap rocks.

buckeejit · 11/10/2019 13:00

eBay is good for getting semi precious stones etc

BlueChampagne · 11/10/2019 15:25

UK Geology website has some starter kits. Slightly more expensive, but one to remember if the interest continues?

If he like fossils too, how about a fossil hammer and perhaps a ticket on a guided fossil walk. We did this without six year old this year, and he loved it. It also subsequently gave us a few free days out over the summer, looking for fossils at the beach.
