Can we compile a list of decent stocking fillers - no plastic tat?

So after reading the what won't you be buying this year thread it got me thinking about all the rubbish that I buy every single year, and most of it goes into the Christmas stockings.

What would you put into the stocking that isn't plastic tat, but maybe a little more expensive than the usual Poundland stuff?

My kids are all senior school age or older so I was thinking of a nice stocking with stuff that will actually be used( maybe even appreciated...)

So far I've come up with more for dds than dss,

Ethique shower bars
Chocolate truffles rather than coins
Bamboo socks
Eyeshadow pallet
Body shop camomile cleansing balm
Good quality pen

Any more ideas?

Short answer, but a book if they like reading.

dementedma · 01/09/2019 09:21

Notebook with recycled paper
Pants
Soap/shampoo bars
Shaving soap and brush
Packet of wildflower seeds
Tealight holders
Wooden yoyo

MamaRaisingBoys · 01/09/2019 09:24

Battery packs or pop sockets for their phone
Gift card for cinema/coffee shop

Depends what their into but some eco friendly type stuff such as beeswax wraps, reusable straws, reusable makeup remover cloths or pads

They’re*

As my older two grew up i began to offer them a sweet or a “smelly” stocking. The sweet one obviously had sweets and confectionary but also maybe treat foods like mini Pringles cans or pop tarts or American candy. The smelly one was toiletries, new razor, flannel, bath bomb etc.
If they chose sweet they didn’t get any other sweets but might get some smellies wrapped up anyway and vice versa.

This year 10 year old dd was offered the above as I thought she was old enough now but she has asked for “some sweet, some
Smelly and some sensory” 😂

Bath toys are a good non tat filler, as are little pots of play doh, pencils, cutlery, rolled up magazine, umbrella, stacking cups for tinies, pringles, special sweets you’d not normally get them...

BeyondMyWits · 01/09/2019 09:37

My girls - teens - will get,

shower stuff,
some makeup (that has been listed with specific instructions on what is liked),
power bank for phone,
set of in-ear headphones
warm socks
Nandos card

All have been asked for at some point this summer (and been told - put it on a list for me so I don't forget).

It is all being ordered through local retailers as we are having an Amazon free year this year (makes the tech more expensive, and planning more important, but hey ho)

Good thread!

Small game (at school they have a form room so anything to keep the boys off their phones is good)
Hairbrush (he may even figure out how to use it)

I’ll need to start thinking!

redexpat · 01/09/2019 09:46

Mine always get new socks, and a bathbomb, and the some otherstuff.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 01/09/2019 10:28

When mine were at secondary school and university, we included these and these. Very handy for marking pages,
especially during exam time! One DC still uses them now in his work.

Anything hobby related? One DC has a hobby which uses small containers of consumables, so we sometimes pop one of those in their stocking. Travel size toiletries and a collapsible toothbrush, for them to keep in a nice toiletry bag ready for the times they decide to stay over at a mates house.

glenthebattleostrich · 01/09/2019 10:38

My 9.5 year old girl is getting -

Stationery
Bobbles
Bath bomb
Sweets
Craft bits
Socks
Card game
Water bottle

She's also asking for a bamboo cup (like mine) for her hot chocolate.Trying to stay away from plastic that that is thrown away within 3 minutes!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/09/2019 10:38

Stuff I'll be repeating
Book
Notepad
Expandable flannel
Badge for scout camp blanket
Mini boo (small collectible ceramic animal)
Themed toiletries
Plasters

Last year they got toiletry bags (little drawstring ones) but they won't need new ones.

DH got a credit card shaped multitool which he has found useful.

Stationary is always good - post its, bluetack, stapler, highlighter etc.

AwdBovril · 01/09/2019 10:42

Hair stuff - I usually get a pretty hairband or clips for DD. Earrings would be good too.

SummerHouse · 01/09/2019 10:44

There are 10p coins recently released with letters A to Z. One with the letter of their name?

Longtalljosie · 01/09/2019 10:50

Yes I’ve been trying to reduce our plastic shit footprint this year and God knows we tend to buy a lot at Christmas.

I’m definitely going for:
Hair scrunches
Stationery
Bath bombs
Socks
Wooden stuff (pen pot or treasure chest maybe)

Papergirl1968 · 01/09/2019 11:15

A nice hot chocolate with marshmallows.
Body spray - something like lynx for girls or Jack Wills.
Scarf and/or gloves. Some gloves have bobbly bits on so they can use their phones while wearing them.
Microwaveable hot water bottle/wheat bag, especially useful when having a period.
Slipper socks
Memory stick
Pretty hair slide or fancy bobble
Purse or wallet with £1 coin in
Chocolate orange
Bath bomb
T-shirt or vest top
Can of Prosecco for older teens

Elphaba17 · 01/09/2019 11:21

Notebook
Book
Gift card (book token or coffee shop)
Scarf
Gloves
Hair scrunchies/hair wrap
Brush
Candle
Nail polish
Hand cream
Card game (exploding kittens?)
Fabric reusable shopper bag
Diary

Milicentbystander72 · 01/09/2019 11:22

Once I put a huge pack of AA batteries in a stocking for my 19 yr DN. She was over the moon!

I find bluetack is always a hit too.

Heymummee · 01/09/2019 11:25

Last year for my DS who is 12 I bought bath bombs, fun shower gel (there’s some that smell like refreshers and drumstick lollies at Wilko), a voucher for his xbox, pens, phone case, sweets, socks, slime, a book of scratch paper and a pencil case.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/09/2019 11:38

Great thread. We’ve bought them new stockings and they’re soooo big Shock

They always get slipper socks, note pads and stationery, a nice tree decoration. Gift card is a good idea.

Not a clue on what to put in the baby’s. Clothes? Wooden rattle? Bit stuck so far.

Elphaba17 · 01/09/2019 11:48

Annelovesgilbert for the baby how about:

Nice bibs
Socks
Bamboo plates, bowls, cups for weaning - tk maxx have some lovely sets
Some wooden animals - the Lanka Kade ones are always popular
Soft toy of a favourite character

Almahart · 01/09/2019 11:53

Treat food like marshmallow fluff

Stationery, bath bombs, slightly fancier socks/pants than normal

PersianStar · 01/09/2019 12:10

@AnneLovesGilbert where did you get your stockings from? All the ones I’m looking at are a bit small

TheWoollybacksWife · 01/09/2019 12:23

@glenthebattleostrich I bought bamboo travel mugs for my DDs last year from a motorway service station. They had lots of lovely designs. I also bought a sleeve with their names on from the same display - it sits over the cup and helps with heat protection. They were definitely still on sale there last time I stopped.
