Can we compile a list of decent stocking fillers - no plastic tat?

So after reading the what won't you be buying this year thread it got me thinking about all the rubbish that I buy every single year, and most of it goes into the Christmas stockings.

What would you put into the stocking that isn't plastic tat, but maybe a little more expensive than the usual Poundland stuff?

My kids are all senior school age or older so I was thinking of a nice stocking with stuff that will actually be used( maybe even appreciated...)

So far I've come up with more for dds than dss,

Ethique shower bars
Chocolate truffles rather than coins
Bamboo socks
Eyeshadow pallet
Body shop camomile cleansing balm
Good quality pen

Any more ideas?

Last year I bought headphones suitable for my son, who was 5 at the time, as he likes going on his ds. Best present ever! He's content and I get a few minutes peace Grin

Milkstick · 01/09/2019 22:59

This thread is the best! When I was 15 my Nana got me a notebook and it was the beginning of a serious diary writing habit. Paperblanks do some lovely ones if you know a wordsmith who'll appreciate something ornate.

Milkstick · 01/09/2019 23:05

Last year I got a mini safe and put sweets inside it.

Milkstick · 01/09/2019 23:06

Can't see my post about invisibobbles - they're great and they do rainbow ones for kids.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/09/2019 23:17

I still enjoy getting the Beano annual at 54...

SummersB · 02/09/2019 06:24

Some fabulous ideas here! I’m loving the AA batteries!

Chimchar · 02/09/2019 06:42

Mine are teens...loads of good ideas here!

I get cans of American pop...fancy flavours of Fanta, or Arizona tea type things. (They sell some in Game)
Also cool packaged cans from the Chinese supermarket....bought some Pokemon ones the other day.

I buy fancy things that they like.... hair and mane shampoo for DD, body shop stuff for older ds. Youngest still loves. Alynx Africa...it's not Christmas without one!

Bath bombs, sweets, socks, posh pens for school/uni, stationary...Wilco do a great range, apple/Xbox/PlayStation/coffee shop/restaurant voucher, tarot cards (for fun), Trainer cleaning bits...crep protect, smudge sticks, wax to redo Kanken backpack, glossy magazine, hobby specific stuff, boxes of tea in pretty packaging....

Can't remember what else!

rosebb1 · 02/09/2019 07:22

My boys are getting:

Small grow crystal kit
Gummy sweet computer controller
Crystal soap / expandable flannel
Perfume making kit (love making "potions")
Oober oonies - think it's a balloon thing
Door hangers to say what mood they're in!!
Fabric paint and plain white t shirt

Might include some stationary bits - they love cello tape!

CamdenTownie · 02/09/2019 09:56

@Chimchar - good call on the crep
Protect, that's 100% going on the list, where do you get the wax for kanken backpacks? I've never thought of that!

Boden were selling some harry potter clothes this season, so I got a house colors top for each of mine, the rest of the stuff in the stocking will be lower value, sweets, a small game, toiletries etc

Chimchar · 02/09/2019 17:35

@CamdenTownie I got the kanken wax here https://www.oipolloi.com/products/fjallraven-greenland-wax?pos=1&&sid=9d066ef92&ss=r

I bought it instore. Not sure how much shipping is.

Crep protect do loads of bits... cleaner, protector, individual wipes etc. I get it from Size. There another posh brand that do similar. I saw it in selfridges but can't remember the name!

Those 'magic eraser' blocks are brilliant for cleaning trainers. Got a pack for ds last Christmas and he was quite puzzled by them. It was quite fun! 😊

Another thing I always get are one of those cardboard masks with a photo of a celeb... we've had John Cena, Alan Sugar... planning on getting one of that silly twat, Trump, this year I think. Grin

cheesemumma · 02/09/2019 17:44

@dementedma seeds is such a lovely idea. I'll be doing that and suggesting it to family as well. Thank you!

katmarie · 02/09/2019 18:02

I'm looking for ideas for babies and toddlers. My ds will be 23 months and we'll have a 6 week old by then (although they wont be getting a lot as they won't really understand it all) so far for ds on the list I have xmas socks, an apple and an orange (traditional), a book, and I'm on the look out for wooden toys. Trying to avoid the plastic tat as we get inundated with it from family anyway.

NotYourHolidayDick · 02/09/2019 18:07

Following this one!

Youseethethingis · 02/09/2019 18:41

I think stockings are allowed to be for the real presents (for older kids especially as what they like tends to be smaller but more expensive) and not just the filler itty bitty stuff. For example a nice bottle of perfume and some Pandora jewellery for a teen DD might be most of the budget for her, but go down well as the main presents alongside some nice chocolates and a Lush bath bomb. With a stocking like that I’d say job done and no need for mountains of cheaper stuff to “bulk up” which is where I think people go wrong. Including myself, and l’m making a conscious effort not to do that this year!

FilthyforFirth · 02/09/2019 18:42

Would also be interested in ideas for toddlers. My DS will be 2.5 at xmas and the amount of presents is horrendous as we have such a large family. I'd love to keep his stocking plastic free if possible.

redexpat · 02/09/2019 20:18

Filthy have you got a lidl or aldi near you? They often have lovely wooden toys for around £5. And lidls wooden train tracks fit brio ones although they cost a bit more.

mumontherun14 · 02/09/2019 20:31

Anyone got any ideas for games or trivia types for stocking fillers for teens? Looking for DS 15.

I usually do
DS - Likes football , Xbox & Marvel
Books
games
DVD
Battery toothbrush
Deoderant set
New pants and socks
Annual
Chocolate
Now thinking I am a bit stuck for ideas. I've added bed socks now after reading this but he is a gamer loves Xbox and everything is downloaded so hard to get him films or music as he can dowload anything.

DD - Pony daft
New riding socks
Riding Gloves
Bath bombs
Nail sets
Toothbrush
Sweets
Pony annual
DVD's
Book
game
Diary
Nice pens
Bed socks
Pants & socks

helpmum2003 · 02/09/2019 21:37

Besh is a good stocking filler game for teens. Also Pass the Pigs.

FilthyforFirth · 02/09/2019 21:58

Thanks @redexpat I have both so will check them out. He loves trains!

sueelleker · 03/09/2019 11:03

Puzzle books? The Works always have a good choice. Or adult colouring books.

CamdenTownie · 03/09/2019 11:53

@Youseethethingis that's exactly what I plan to do, but they'll also get trainers ( i'd be buying them anyway so may as well wrap them)

They all have stockings with their names on that they've had for years so we always use those, they also have huge Christmas pudding shaped sacks with their names on so I'm not sure what to do with those 🤔

Ive spoken to the youngest three and explained that I'm not buying unwanted gifts this year but they will still get nice things, that they want and will use!

I'm actually looking forward to carefully choosing gifts for them and planning what to give to who.
