Am I crazy to think I can get a turkey on Christmas Eve?

I’ve not got a turkey yet as I left it too late to preorder anything. Would I be mad to pop out on Christmas Eve and expect to buy a preprepared, ready stuffed one? Will the shops be empty?

No, the shops won't be empty. Yes, you will find a turkey if done description in a supermarket. Will you find a ready-stuffed one? Maybe.

Go early is my best suggestion!

DimProblem · 22/12/2018 10:21

Don’t know about the stuffing but I get ours on Christmas Eve every year. Takes up too much room in the fridge to get it before. If you’re up early, you should be fine.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/12/2018 10:21

Of some, not if done. Bloody autocorrect!

Littlelambpeep · 22/12/2018 10:22

You will . I always do but our local supermarket opens at 9am and I queue and wait

TheGhostsOfPresidentsYetToCome · 22/12/2018 10:23

The little Asda near us always has loads left on Christmas Eve. Not sure if they have stuffed ones. They drop them all before closing too.

IggyAce · 22/12/2018 10:23

You will probably get one of some description, you might even get lucky and find one reduced.

FireUnderpants · 22/12/2018 10:28

MIL used to finish work at 9pm Christmas Eve then head to the large supermarket, before it closed at 10, to get a hopefully reduced turkey. A few years she got several crowns as that was all was left.

This is too risky for my anxiety so I've reserved us one this year.

My MIL always buys the turkey on Christmas Eve. You can get a good bargain! However I always feel a little sad about the ones that are left by the end of the day as it seems highly likely they will be thrown away.

masterstef · 22/12/2018 11:20

I'm hoping to get one tomorrow or Xmas eve.

You can get a good bargain later in the day for M&S Christmas turkeys.

dementedpixie · 22/12/2018 11:38

We bought our turkey yesterday off the shelf. It's ok until the 26th. Do you need to wait until Xmas eve?

TheBaltictriangle · 22/12/2018 18:17

My friend always buys two turkeys on Christmas Eve near closing time. One turkey is for Christmas and one to cook later on around Easter. They start to reduce fresh items around 2:30-3 pm so that's the best time to get a bargain.

We're away and not home until Sunday PM so I too will be buying ours on Christmas Eve. I'm hoping for a duck but suspect we may end up with a turkey crown. In my experience if you can hold your nerve there's plenty available on the 24th, and if you're luck some great reductions Grin.

Lisbon · 22/12/2018 19:10

Yes, you will.

We have a family tradition of celebrating Christmas on the 24th (I'm from the continent), 25th with British in-laws and Boxing Day at home (just us and DC) when we recreate Christmas dinner and do all our favourite things the way we love them.

DH goes out on the 26th and picks up a turkey (usually from M&S) and we have never ever struggled to find one!

mamaslave18 · 22/12/2018 20:02

Great it sounds like I don’t need to panic. I’m hoping for a bargain so will chance the afternoon.

I haven’t got mine yet either, I haven’t enough room in the fridge so was planning on waiting until Christmas Eve.
I’m fretting a bit now as I’ve got guests coming. Xmas Confused

Jakethekid · 23/12/2018 13:41

I went to lidl last night and they had loads of Christmas meat available. I was quite surprised. Fresh turkeys hams beef etc etc

DanSullivan · 23/12/2018 14:10

My mum buys the turkey on Christmas Eve every year. Last year was the first time she’s ever had a problem: no turkeys in Tesco or Sainsbury’s! It was a local issue apparently, even people who’d ordered a turkey weren’t able to get them. Mum got a lovely bronze turkey in Aldi. Smile

TheBaltictriangle · 23/12/2018 14:20

Just returned from M&S and plenty of turkeys and joints of meat on sale. Lots of Christmas veg bags for 40p a bag, I bought parsnips. Will return for more to store in freezer for later.
