Can you cut the end of the branches of a real Christmas tree?

Does anyone know if Can you cut the end of the branches on a real Christmas tree or will it kill it faster ?

The tree won't mind particularly, but you'll see the exposed part at the end quite starkly. Will that matter to you?

I wouldn't have thought it would kill it faster, but it won't look the same.
