Help with getting my wife a present (and male advice in turn)

Hi Mumsnet. I’m a man, I come in peace.

Last year you helped me with a truly excellent load of advice about Christmas presents for my other half. Great successes were a Coach handbag, sailor knot bangle and various other bits and pieces. I was very grateful for your help and they were well received. This year I’m completely stumped again. I have a tendency to buy a load of crap that she doesn’t really want, so would value any help you can give.

To give you a picture of her she’s (a young) 41, pretty, slim and likes outdoors life. Sadly no kids but a dog she loves and likes things like Boden, Joules and similar brands. I’d like to get her some slightly off beat stuff, but also something decent and classic. Will probably spend anywhere between £300 - £500 possibly more if it’s something special.

By way of a trade, I’ll give you some ideas for men. I’m 38 and pretty similar to her in many ways. Things I’d genuinely like:

Good shoes/ boots – men rarely buy these for themselves.
High quality socks/ underwear – it’s boring but we genuinely like them
A decent belt – again something we don’t look to buy but would like
Whisky – Old Pulteney is my favourite. A very good whisky.
Cool whisky glasses (cut crystal types are great)
Cool peaky blinders style flat caps etc
Anything that relates to space and the universe – books especially
Tools – I’m a man, I love tools
Experience days are great

Things to steer away from

Unless obsessed with sport (and I like sport a lot) stay away from the crappy football/ rugby related gifts. The generally just get shut in a drawer (exception is decent sport autobiographies or tickets)
That loud shirt you like with the stars – he doesn’t
We don’t really want moisturiser but some toiletries are okay
Lots of chocolate bars – hmmm
I don’t want a towel
Not another washbag
Nothing related to mobile phones

Thanks for any help you can give!

Apple Watch or a good outdoor jacket?

DH once surprised me with a coastal walking long weekend we began with Thursday night Troon (Piersland) walked to Ayr on the Friday (Brig O Doon) did a bit of Burns stuff on the Saturday morning then walked to Dunure (Harbour hotel) then onto Turnberry Sunday morning for a massage and night then train back to Troon from Girvan to collect our car and drive home!

It was special as from the area but moved away. Perhaps something similar?

You just brought her wellies? You need something a bit different then, otherwise it’s kind of recycling the same idea.

Personalised jewellery from Posh Totty. I’m never disappointed with anything from there. Or a really nice purse like Mulberry and a Mulberry keyring. The sort of thing I’m too tight to buy myself Smile

I am a bit similar to your wife. DHjust gave me a Rab mircrodown jacket for my birthday. I love it. I realise that they have been around a while and she may already have one.

Sorry to seem like a bucket of cold water, but my DP dresses himself, and wouldn't thank me for trying to. Especially in a "Peaky Blinders" flat cap!

I would say tools are the equivalent of buying a woman an iron or an electric tin opener.

You sound nice, I'm sure you'll get your wife something lovely. I personally hate to receive soap.

White Company cashmere ballet slippers. The ultimate in lounging luxury!

chocolatebox1 · 29/11/2018 19:44

How about; Johnston's of Elgin cashmere sweaters, White Company cashmere loungewear, Smythson jewellery box/travel wallet/diary, Mulberry or Burberry scarf, diamond stud earrings, Hermes belt, stylish outdoor suitable bag eg smart/leather backpack or Longchamp/similar across body bag, Dyson hairdryer or curling tong.
If you think it's appropriate, you could visit somewhere like Bicester Village and get a nicer bag/coat or item which would usually be a price that could have been out of your budget. Also check out the outnet.com, you might find luxury nightwear/jewellery/bags which are to her taste.
You sound like you have very good taste and have been very thoughtful already, your wife is a lucky lady and I hope she is happy with her gifts.

The dressing gowns from One Hundred Stars are beautiful (especially the Botanical one).

This one is good for most age ranges: Labyrinth (by Ravensburger).
Its an old game that has passed the test of time.

Starlighting888 · 29/11/2018 20:30

I sound similar to your OH things I’d like would be

Jo Malone toiletries
Neom - the Reed dispenser (I think that’s what they are called)
White company scarf
Nice Jumper or log. Cardigan from Whistles/ Reiss

What about a hand drawn picture of the dog? These are lovely www.florenceandottie.co.uk

Diamonds studs or even Pandora studs.

Starlighting888 · 29/11/2018 20:31

That should be long cardigan not a log cardigan!

SoYo · 04/12/2018 19:33

Something lovely and cashmere from Wyse?
