Help with getting my wife a present (and male advice in turn)

Hi Mumsnet. I’m a man, I come in peace.

Last year you helped me with a truly excellent load of advice about Christmas presents for my other half. Great successes were a Coach handbag, sailor knot bangle and various other bits and pieces. I was very grateful for your help and they were well received. This year I’m completely stumped again. I have a tendency to buy a load of crap that she doesn’t really want, so would value any help you can give.

To give you a picture of her she’s (a young) 41, pretty, slim and likes outdoors life. Sadly no kids but a dog she loves and likes things like Boden, Joules and similar brands. I’d like to get her some slightly off beat stuff, but also something decent and classic. Will probably spend anywhere between £300 - £500 possibly more if it’s something special.

By way of a trade, I’ll give you some ideas for men. I’m 38 and pretty similar to her in many ways. Things I’d genuinely like:

Good shoes/ boots – men rarely buy these for themselves.
High quality socks/ underwear – it’s boring but we genuinely like them
A decent belt – again something we don’t look to buy but would like
Whisky – Old Pulteney is my favourite. A very good whisky.
Cool whisky glasses (cut crystal types are great)
Cool peaky blinders style flat caps etc
Anything that relates to space and the universe – books especially
Tools – I’m a man, I love tools
Experience days are great

Things to steer away from

Unless obsessed with sport (and I like sport a lot) stay away from the crappy football/ rugby related gifts. The generally just get shut in a drawer (exception is decent sport autobiographies or tickets)
That loud shirt you like with the stars – he doesn’t
We don’t really want moisturiser but some toiletries are okay
Lots of chocolate bars – hmmm
I don’t want a towel
Not another washbag
Nothing related to mobile phones

Thanks for any help you can give!

Ooh yes - a willow cashmere wrap would be amazing!

Alanamackree · 28/11/2018 17:33

I’ve never known anyone with an interest in photography that wasn’t hankering after another new lens.

KelpianCasserole · 28/11/2018 17:41

Cant fault the suggestions youve had, but also if she likes baking and has a stylish kitchen then a kitchenaid mixer. Retro styled, heavy as iron and Highly desirable. Many many colours too. About £300 - £500

Dyson hairdryer
Simple human 20cm sensor mirror
Mulberry wallet/purse
Tiffany pendant/bangle/bracelet
Luxury silk pillowcases (helps prevent wrinkles!)

whatnametopick · 28/11/2018 20:50

Laska2Meryls · 28/11/2018 20:52

I recently bought myself this tres chic beret.. sadly although I had hinted last year and it didst appear. This year I have a large hint out for these boots or any of their lovely jumpers

Laska2Meryls · 28/11/2018 20:58

If my DH bought me a Kitchen aid/Kenwood mixer or indeed any item of kitchen/ house equipment for Christmas , he'd get it wrapped around his head!!..but that didnt stop me buying him a 'conservatory cleaning kit' a couple of years ago. It was meant as a joke but he really took to ecloths

Doghorsechicken · 28/11/2018 21:11

Dubarry boots, I live in mine & I’m a country girl.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/11/2018 21:15

I am snorting with laughter at the ‘loud shirt with the stars’

I bought one for DH. He has never worn it. I suspect you might be right

WeShouldBeFriends · 28/11/2018 21:20

Jenny Thanks for the ordnance survey recommendation, just ordered one for my Mum's partner centred around his farm, he will love it!

JennyHolzersGhost · 28/11/2018 22:59

Flowers for everyone who’s just discovering the OS maps now! You’re welcome. Hope your loved ones appreciate them.

JennyHolzersGhost · 28/11/2018 23:00

(Also they’re great for getting framed if you want to put them on the wall ...)

HalleLouja · 28/11/2018 23:13

I love my merino wool running tops and am sure you can get ones for hiking etc.

Also loving the OS map idea.

Carleatspeas · 29/11/2018 08:10

Okay, I’m zeroing in on some boots. Might get the Dubarry ones. Are they worth it?

Laska I like the ones you linked but I’m not 100% she will...

Laska THANKS for the link with the hats/beret.
Exactly what I needed for me (Wink) so I can now give very strong hint and a link to H

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 29/11/2018 08:29

I would like some Georg Jensen jewellery. Probably the savannah earrings with either a bangle or necklace to match.

A mulberry bag and/or scarf would never go amiss. At the moment I am coveting a small evening bag.

Cashmere is always good. Either a scarf or a jumper. Will keep her lovely and warm and it’s so, so soft and comfy.

A matching Pom Pom hat and scarf set from Amelia Jane (you can get fur or faux fur Pom poms). Navy or oatmeal, with a brown Pom Pom.

Hercy · 29/11/2018 08:38

Dubarry are worth it, they last really well. I've had mine a couple of years now and they're still going strong.

Other things my husband has got me over the years that have gone down well, within your budget:
Mulberry purse
Mulberry scarf
Tiffany bangle (wave three row bracelet)
Diamond stud earrings (Purely Diamonds)
Musto dog walking coat
Jo Malone perfumes and bath oils
Fleece dressing gown
Make up (YSL foundation, Clarins eyeshadow, Benefit highlight & blushers, & mascara)

Or if you really wanted to push the boat out, I think a Mulberry Bayswater handbag would be a safe bet with most women, because it's so classic.

Don't get Hunter Wellies. They're poorly made since they stopped manufacturing in Scotland and would need replacing 1-2 times a year if she were give them reasonable use eg for dogs walks etc.

peachypetite · 29/11/2018 08:42

I'm also going to check out the OS map!

DerRosenkavelier · 29/11/2018 08:49

A really nice merino base layer top. Try Icebreaker for technical ones, or Howies or Finesterre for funky ones. They are brilliant if you are outdoorsy as they keep you warm, are light , and you can wear them just as nice long sleeved t shirts as well.

DerRosenkavelier · 29/11/2018 08:51

Does she ski? If she’s outdoorsy and you want to spoil her and you, a weekend skiing in the alps?

If she doesn’t, take her on her first skiing holiday! Grin

Doghorsechicken · 29/11/2018 08:59

Dubarrys really last, they’re so warm & grippy for winter walks with the dog too. I wear mine for everything, shopping, walking, riding. Infact I completed a 26 mile walk in mine 2 years ago!

StylishMummy · 29/11/2018 09:16

Dubarry boots
Joules field coat
Barbour knitted snood
Barbour gilet (on sale on House of Fraser)
High end sea salt truffles
Subscription to Happy Sock Company

Lisbon · 29/11/2018 11:55

Same age/preferences as your wife here.
Some things I'd be happy to receive:

  • Diptyque soap
  • Johnstons of Elgin wrist warmers (they do the cashmere for the White Company) or Brora
  • Cashmere coatigan (as loungewear)
  • Pimp My T2 Fine Bone China Tea Mug With Infuser & Lid
  • Subscription to Bird & Blend Tea (lovely and original blends)
  • Anthropologie gift card
  • Celtic & Co slippers
  • Stella Mccartney Adidas gym bag
  • Lululemon leggings
  • Merino Wool base layers
Didiusfalco · 29/11/2018 16:53

Those boots are nice Lasaka.

I’m sure they’re amazingly made but I don’t like the design of the Dubarry’s. How confident are you of her style op?

Carleatspeas · 29/11/2018 17:12

Confident of her style...Hmmm?

She's what I'd call a classic dresser. Nothing too bling. Would prefer one quality item to 5 cheaper ones.

The Dubarry boots are tempting and she'd be happy with them, but I bought her some nice wellies recently and I'm not sure where the crossover of wearing them is.
