Help with getting my wife a present (and male advice in turn)

Carleatspeas · 27/11/2018 11:09

Hi Mumsnet. I’m a man, I come in peace.

Last year you helped me with a truly excellent load of advice about Christmas presents for my other half. Great successes were a Coach handbag, sailor knot bangle and various other bits and pieces. I was very grateful for your help and they were well received. This year I’m completely stumped again. I have a tendency to buy a load of crap that she doesn’t really want, so would value any help you can give.

To give you a picture of her she’s (a young) 41, pretty, slim and likes outdoors life. Sadly no kids but a dog she loves and likes things like Boden, Joules and similar brands. I’d like to get her some slightly off beat stuff, but also something decent and classic. Will probably spend anywhere between £300 - £500 possibly more if it’s something special.

By way of a trade, I’ll give you some ideas for men. I’m 38 and pretty similar to her in many ways. Things I’d genuinely like:

Good shoes/ boots – men rarely buy these for themselves.
High quality socks/ underwear – it’s boring but we genuinely like them
A decent belt – again something we don’t look to buy but would like
Whisky – Old Pulteney is my favourite. A very good whisky.
Cool whisky glasses (cut crystal types are great)
Cool peaky blinders style flat caps etc
Anything that relates to space and the universe – books especially
Tools – I’m a man, I love tools
Experience days are great

Things to steer away from

Unless obsessed with sport (and I like sport a lot) stay away from the crappy football/ rugby related gifts. The generally just get shut in a drawer (exception is decent sport autobiographies or tickets)
That loud shirt you like with the stars – he doesn’t
We don’t really want moisturiser but some toiletries are okay
Lots of chocolate bars – hmmm
I don’t want a towel
Not another washbag
Nothing related to mobile phones

Thanks for any help you can give!

I'm similar and what I'd like: white company bath robe and candle. Luxury silk pjs with co ordinating cashmere fluffy cardigan, B&0 wireless headphones, hotel chocolat velvitizer (number 1 on the list in my head) and snow on Christmas day. I'll receive none of these things but he tries as do I. Because we are both hit and miss with gifts I suggested to Mr that we treat each other to a suprise mini break as we have hectic work schedules and are terrible at planning time together. I was so relieved he thought it was a great idea, I was on verge of buying an iPad and didn't know which one or size. So instead I've booked a break in stunning place in bath with two days visit to longleat which we will both enjoy.

You can order a customised OS map on the Ordnance Survey website !

Yes! They're really cool, I got my DB and DSIL one when they moved into their new home. Something a bit different for walkers.

I second good quality socks too, I always want them for Christmas but no one buys them because they're 'boring' Hmm

Casablanca78 · 27/11/2018 19:20

I'm 40 and also Boden, Joules and outdoor loving! Some things I have loved/would love:

  • Hunter wellies or Dubarry boots
  • Mulberry scarf (I love the large tartan one in macaroon which is bright oranges and pinks, was very sought after last Christmas and sold out everywhere!).
  • in fact, a Mulberry handbag!
  • a night or weekend away somewhere fancy
  • perfume & posh makeup (Charlotte Tilbury)
  • Harris Gin and glasses (beautiful cut glass)
  • Barbour cape & bobble hat
  • Kitchen aid stand mixer (if she loves baking).
  • dressing gown from Cath Kidston or White Company (The White Company have a lovely pair of cashmere fingerless gloves in grey if you go down that route. Most things in the White Company are fab so you won't go too wrong in there!).
Hope that helps!
huggybear · 27/11/2018 19:34

Casablanca are you me?

I add Jo Malone perfume and candles, a good throw, some luxury bath bits.

Thanks OP for your suggestions, very useful.

Casablanca78 · 27/11/2018 21:36

@huggybear ha yes, sounds like it!
I do also love Jo Malone perfume (well in fact anything Jo Malone!)

Iamneverfull · 27/11/2018 21:48

If you are buying her make up then I recommend these items..
Mascara (lancome hypnose gift set...get the set as its the same price as the mascara and you get free gifts with it)
YSL touche eclat gift set
Dior Grege Nail Polish
Dior Rose Montaigne Lipstick
Dior Lipglow 001
Dior 'Charnelle' Blusher

Perfume:
Jadore
Coco Mademoiselle (chanel)
Miss Dior
Chance (chanel)

Didiusfalco · 27/11/2018 22:37

@JennyHolzerdGhost that OS map is an amazing idea. I want one!

ja9r · 27/11/2018 22:40

Such loverly ideas... love this thread!

1stTimeMama · 27/11/2018 23:55

@Anandale, I second Bridgedales. They're the only sock I have now, walking or not!

chumsnet · 28/11/2018 00:18

800 thread count bedlinen. It’s so expensive you’d never buy it for yourself, but as you spend a third of your life in bed, go all out.

Exotic flavours of jam from Fortnum & Mason or National Trust shops.

Really good cheese from a specialist cheesemonger, together with damson cheese, Membrillo, chutneys, and a proper selection of biscuits.

Put together a ‘selection box’ or stocking containing favourite chocolates, nuts, sweets and crisps. Tangtastics and Monster Munch are hard for even the most sophisticated palate to resist.

Really good handcream - Aesop is very “now” and smells wonderful, but Clarins actually works.

A dessert wine.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 28/11/2018 02:02

See I love nice bedlinen and kitchen stuff but I view those more as 'gifts for the household' rather than for me if yswim?
This year I've bought myself a pastel cream Roberts digital radio/speaker for my study (DH & I don't buy for each other at Christmas).
OP does she read? Kindle? Magazine subscription perhaps?

MozzieMagnet · 28/11/2018 02:43

Not on the high street do personalised star maps (Date/place you met or married etc). They also do personalised song sound wave prints.
National Trust membership/travel book eg pies and prejudice stuart maconie.

Nanalisa60 · 28/11/2018 03:40

A spar day with lunch and lots of treatments my husband and my best friends husband both got us a day at a luxury spa so we went together we really enjoyed it. Theatre tickets. But one of the best thing my husband every got me was a Card that said he promised to go to Ceroc dance 💃 lesson with me I had always wanted to learn to dance and he had always said no way!! So giving me a promise to learn to dance with me was very specially that was 10 years ago and we still dance regularly. There are classes for Ceroc all over the Uk just look up Ceroc online and I’m sure you will find one near you.

Phillipa12 · 28/11/2018 04:41

Personalised os map, Brora have fab cashmere fingerless gloves and scarves, Bridgedales for walking socks, Altberg for serious slipper like feel and lightweight hiking boots.( my 2 local gamekeepers recommended this brand, they were right) An umbrella, cant beat a decent brolly, the same goes for slippers......sad but true!

1MillionSelfiesTakenByMyKids · 28/11/2018 05:18

Using this thread as ideas for my sister who is notoriously hard to buy for.
Early 30s. No children yet. Aspirational yuppie London lifestyle but planning a move to the country. Has way more money than me so can buy herself nicer things than i ever could and no interest in the things i could make her (I'm quite crafty but she's sneery about it).

I would love a really good, rich handcream. I liked the Aesop one i tried. New woolly items are always appreciated at xmas - Phase 8 had some nice pieces when i popped in recently.

Colabottle10 · 28/11/2018 05:31

Great thread. OP mentioned a belt for men and I came across this great company a month ago. Family run, everything is handmade and bespoke. They make amazing leather stuff and their customer service is second to none. You can still order bespoke belts until 5th Dec for Christmas and they do a good selection of ready to wear belts too.

tsonlyme · 28/11/2018 07:09

Great thread! I’ve just spent a happy couple of hours creating maps for people I love, thank you.

Carleatspeas · 28/11/2018 08:18

Thanks all some great stuff here and has been really helpful. Mumsnet is my fantastic secret for helping out with this stuff.

I've got quite a few little things, but could do with a bigger present. She has wellies, camera etc? Any ideas on that one?

The belt site above is a great idea for men. Might get one myself!

GruffaloStick · 28/11/2018 08:45

What about a leather jacket? There's a couple of nice ones in The White Company.
Or a more outdoorsy one like Barbour etc

Strugglingtodomybest · 28/11/2018 10:02

800 thread count bedlinen - good idea! I know what I'll be asking for now Smile

WeirdCatLady · 28/11/2018 11:08

How about some good binoculars?

user187656748 · 28/11/2018 11:17

I am surgically attached to my fingerless cashmere gloves (they're the type with no finger bits just one big hole for all fingers and a separate hole for thumbs). I am wearing them as I type this. I wear them all the time at this time of year and last night DS2 jumped into the car freezing cold and dripping wet from rugby training and demanded the "soft warm gloves" to help him warm up.

OP how about a cashmere poncho for a main present? You can buy very thin ones which are nice for the summer or much thicker winter ones. I like willow cashmere.

GrouchyKiwi · 28/11/2018 12:10

The customised OS map is brilliant! DH is so hard to buy for but I think he'd love that. His birthday is early January too so it's extra tough to think of enough good presents.

CrunchieFriday · 28/11/2018 15:15

My husband got me a handmade wooden jewellery box ( it is a bit quirky as is not completely "square" - it is extremely beautiful and very tactile)

He also buys something to go in it now and again!

I'd love a new smart but warm dog walking coat. Also nice candles and urban apothecaries bath oils ( great for relaxing after a long walk!)
