Sending a gift to Australia, buying from the UK

GruffaloStick · 26/11/2018 21:54

I want to send a small gift to a friend who lives in Australia. Normally I buy from the UK and post over to her but I wondered if I can buy from an Australian website/store (Amazon Aus for e.g) buying from the UK. I know she sends gifts to family in the UK using Argos, Debenhams etc.
Is there a charge for buying with a British bank account?
I've googled but can't seem to find an answer or word it correctly so hoped a mnetter would understand this garbled postGrin

If you have the Amazon app, I think you can change it to Australia? You’ll just pay in Aussie dollars I presume 🤷🏼‍♀️

Fresh01 · 26/11/2018 21:59

Marks and Spencer online do delivery to Oz. I got an offer for free delivery before and it was very very quick.

candlefloozy · 26/11/2018 22:00

Literally could have wrote this myself!
I need to send lots of gifts over. Thanks for the heads up about m and s.
I couldn't work amazon out

CorianderSnell · 26/11/2018 22:01

Not usually a charge from the merchant; just whatever your bank does for exchange rate. Most big department stores no probs to pay on a UK card, but occasionally I spend hours researching something, finally decide to buy then find they decline my card Angry because of UK registered address . Have used David Jones and Myer fine, plus a heap of smaller flowers/cards/kids toys sites. Mostly no problem

Longdistance · 26/11/2018 22:01

It’s under settings and change the country.

LuckyDiamond · 26/11/2018 22:02

I buy from Target in Oz which accepts Uk credit cards and does fast delivery to addresses on Oz.

mnahmnah · 26/11/2018 22:03

Next Australia website takes PayPal. Marks and Spencer’s Australia website too

playftseforme · 26/11/2018 22:06

John Lewis delivers to Australia for a flat GBP10 fee

WWYDhelpplease · 26/11/2018 22:10

Or buy a Myers or David Jones voucher online.

GruffaloStick · 27/11/2018 07:37

Thank you all, that's really helpful. No matter how I worded it Google couldn't answer. I thought buying direct from an Aus store would be quicker than sending from here.
I'll check the Amazon site and thank you very much for other store recommendations, lots of options it seems

Myers is like Debenhams and David Jones is like John Lewis.

I need the latest advice on where in the U.K. I can order a gift to my daughter in Oz …

Hairyfriend · 18/11/2021 00:38

Things have improved, but as recently as a year ago, the choice from amazon Aus was very limited, compared to what you can buy from their UK site.

Do you know what you'd like to send your friend and a rough price range? We might be able to find an Aussie site recommendation for you.

WholeClassKeptIn · 18/11/2021 00:38

We've bought some nice presents for aussie relatives by finding online companies local to them. There was a fab specialist cheese company we used once that went down well.

I would definitely by from a store in Australia and have it sent from here (I’m in Australia). The postal service is overloaded right now so when we have bought anything recently it comes with a warning from Australia Post that deliveries are taking longer than usual (most of the country has been in a hard lockdown and is only just starting to emerge in the last month, so people went crazy for online shopping).

Target and Kmart are great shops to buy toys from, as is Big W. Depends on what you’re buying too.

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 18/11/2021 04:47

I'm in Australia and I regularly go to Amazon UK to buy things for my family in Scotland. The prices all come up in the local currency but you can just pay using your normal bank card and it takes out the equivalent amount.

Next and M & S are good. Also I've bought in the last 12 months from a few Aussie stores - Booktopia/Peter Alexander/David Jones. I did also pack a box for DS last Christmas and it was sent by courier for about £75 - so pricey but quick and efficient. It meant I could send the daft things that I'd normally put in a stocking, as well as 'proper' presents. We reckoned that we saved the £75 by not having him home eating everything in sight! Grin
Wombatstew · 18/11/2021 05:20

My sister (UK) just bought some things for my DS from Kmart. She paid by PayPal and I collected it from my local store. They will deliver though. Any Au online shop that accepts PayPal will deliver. Try Kmart, Big W, Target or Myer, David Jones department stores. Also Ebay.au

Maxiedog123 · 18/11/2021 05:26

If Australian shops won't accept a UK credit card with a UK billing address, which is likely, just pay by PayPal and they can't tell.

stripes1 · 18/11/2021 06:04

I send to relatives using Amazon. Don’t use the app, go to the Amazon Australia website, sign in using your normal Amazon login details, add the Australian address to your address list and make sure you choose that to show the right postage (it will default to showing you postage prices to the UK). Never had any problems with it, payment though usual saved Amazon credit card.

Londonnight · 18/11/2021 06:08

I regularly use AmazonCa [ Canada ] to buy presents for family there with my UK debit card. You will pay whatever charges your bank charges on the payment.
As pp said, don't use the app, use the actual Amazon Australia website

MimiDaisy11 · 18/11/2021 06:11

I have a sibling in Australia and buy all things there even cards as I use Moonpig Australia. Much quicker and cheaper.

purplesequins · 18/11/2021 06:22

for sending to aus for christmas it's already too late. would have needed to go out 2 weeks ago...
we often order at local department stores for delivery for friends/family abroad. just pay by credit card.

SpeakingFranglais · 18/11/2021 06:26

And don’t forget, if the relative is someone such as a teen, that you would normally just give cash to if they lived here, you can send cash through PayPal. I do that regularly for birthdays.

Is that parcels or everything? The RM site says 6th December to Aus.

I haven’t posted my Christmas cards yet, was going to do them tomorrow.
