What mobile to get for DS

I'm not great with technology at the best of times, I tend to stick with what I know! But DS 11 really wants a Samsung Galaxy for Xmas. I've tried looking at different deals but I'm left utterly confused - I hate phones!! What deals do you have for your DC? Do any of the networks prevent children from going over their data allowance as opposed to just charging extra when they do?

tesco mobile offer capped contracts, meaning the kids can't go over their data, call or text limits (although mine prefer using whattsapp or instagram to text). more info. and my son who is the same age as yours has a huawei y8 (i think, or perhaps its a y7? they are all similar anyway) and it uses the same operating system as samsung, meaning the layout on the screen looks exactly like a samsung. i'll see if i can find it and ill link it here if so link ps: it was the y7, i dont think a y8 exists!

I would recommend buying a phone outright (we bought from Argos as is nearby but second hand refurbished is a good option too) then get a sim - giffgaff is good and once their data plan runs out tough (my kids have unlimited texts on their plan so they can always contact us). Basic galaxy phones are from £100 but go up to £1000 - kids break and loose them so I would not suggest the higher end!

I'd get a good android handset and get a cheap SIM only. Works out tonns cheaper.

I've recently just got a Cubot P20 for £145. Yup a brand not well known yet but it has an awesome big bright full HD display. Runs latest version of Android. Big memory that is expandable. It's fast and it has a decent spec Samsung Camera in there too. Then a rolling monthly SIM on 3 - £7 a month with 4GB data is plenty.

Mine has a Tesco contract for £8 a month, you can't go over data but by a max of £2.50. We got a second hand iPhone from music magpie. It has, so far, when great and as good as new but for much less.

My Dd has a Tesco sim only that's capped so she can't overspend by more than £2.50 and a Samsung j5 2017 edition from Amazon. Think it was about £135. Its a great phone and no different from mine which is a galaxy s6. Dd is 13 and loves it

Thanks everyone. I popped into Tesco over the weekend and they had quite good deals.

Defo better to buy one outright, i was looking for my dd For next yr when she starts secondary. You can get a Samsung for 50/60 or refirb iPhone se for £100. You can get sims only deal for as cheap as £4 a month and you can cap it with any network.

We are with sky and DS has an iPhone SE with data for £10 a month.

chickywoo · 12/11/2018 20:27

That’s good deal is that the phone included?
Worth looking at op even if your not with sky you can get a friend with sky to take the deal for you and set the direct debit up from your bank - I’ve just done this for a friend who wanted sky’s £6 unlimited texts and calls & 1gb deal but u had to be with sky

BrieAndChilli · 12/11/2018 21:52

Yes that was the phone also!
That was this time last year though, the cheapest I can see at the moment is £16 with the phone included. Am holding out a little longer in case a better deal comes up but going to get it for DD

Purpletigers · 12/11/2018 23:53

Motorola g5 although there’s probably a g6 now .

thesockgap · 13/11/2018 07:12

I just came on to say the Moto G5 is excellent but I see a pp beat me to it! Myself, my DH and my 11yo son all have one. We paid around £150 each last year for the handsets but I think you can get them for around £120 now. Brilliant phone for the price 😊 we have cheap SIM only deals, between us we are with Virgin, Talkmobile and i-D. All are great deals between £4 and £6 a month, I would recommend this rather than taking out a contract on a handset.

muchprefersummer · 14/11/2018 19:17

Thanks everyone, been doing the sums and you're all right in saying it's better to buy outright with a sim only deal. DS is desperate for a Samsung galaxy and amazon have the j6 for about £140, although DH has just told me he wants the Samsung note 9 because it comes with a fortnite skin!! Luckily both DH and I are in agreement he isn't getting that!!!!
I'll look into the sky one although I can't think of any of my friends that have sky!! I'm a cheap freeview and Netflix girl!!Blush
