Starting outdoor xmas lights from scratch

I'm having an outdoor plug fitted for a number of uses but mostly so I can do outdoor xmas lights. Very excited.

We have a 1930s detached bungalow and my gut feel is to outline the roof with warm white lights. There are 4 (currently bare) cherry blossom trees in a line if front of the house. I want yo wrap these in warm white lights too - but it feels like an enormous amount of work.

Anyway- what things should I do? Should I plan to do the trees once well then leave the lights there year round? Any bear traps to avoid? Best place to buy lights (I'm starting from scratch)....

When we first bought outdoor lights we bought icicle type ones to line the apex of the roof. Then bought the rest in the January sakes!! So if you can hold back you'll save loads and have a full on display next year. I still have the blue flashy ones that my XH bought but I don't like them as it feels like the emergency services are queued up at the front of the garden!!
