Dd is 8.5 and I'm looking to get her an iPod. But all I can find is ones that identical to an iPhone and claim to be able to text. I don't want her having a phone and surely being able to text requires a sim??

Does anyone have any other suggestion?

Does it have to be an Apple device?

wingingatlife · 04/11/2018 11:47

No I suppose not!

iPods have IMessage facility, they can only text other Apple devices though

The new iPods all look like an iPhone and have done for a while now they are just a bit lighter and thinner, most have cameras as well although the older ones only have a front camera so selfies only although my DS 9 has got quite good at turning iPod round to take pictures which are generally in focus - they don't need a SIM card but you can send iMessages to other iPhone users when it's connected to the WiFi, you can't send a standard text message on them - hope that helps

Mine had an iPod touch at that age, you can send iMessages, not actual texts but only if the other person also has an i device.

iPod shuffle

wingingatlife · 04/11/2018 11:50

Ah I see! So you can only iMessage to another apple device. Within range or essentially anyone?

I should of asked, what does she actually want it for?
If it's just for music, I agree with imknackeredzzz

If she wants to use you tube, Netflix, Disney life etc then you will need something else.

If it doesn't have to be Apple, have a look at Sony Walkman MP3 players.

Otherwise, you could look at Music Magpie (or similar) for an older refurbished iPod. You can get a refurbished Nano for about £30.

Anyone

wingingatlife · 04/11/2018 11:53

It'll be for music, music videos, camera. I sound mean probably but I don't want my year 4 child having a phone.

Check on eBay for refurbished/new iPod Classic's.

My other half was an Apple genius and swears by them! Such a shame they stopped making them in favour of the newer touch model, which is the one that includes iMesage and social media. The Classic only plays music, and you can add movies on to it too. I've had mine since 2007 and it's still going strong! They carry way more music than the newer models too.

Only issue is if it breaks, Apple consider anything older than 5 years old 'vintage', so won't be able to repair it, so you're limited to private repair companies. If you're worried about your LO having access to the internet on it though, I'd say it's a fair compromise.
