A lovely picture book for a 5 year old?

I want to buy a book but not something they probably already have-Julia Donaldson etc

Can anyone recommends something a bit different?! It’s for a boy but not a particularly boy-ish boy if that makes a difference?!

Oi Frog...

SleepyPaws · 26/10/2018 10:49

Nearly 5yr old DD likes the Oi Dog/ Frog/ Cat books. We also like The Day the Crayons Quit and The day the Crayons came home.

Harebellmeadow · 26/10/2018 10:50

Tidy - about nature and the environment but very funny.

Some dogs do by Jez Alborough
My kids love this book, we have to read it over and over again.

gussiefox · 26/10/2018 15:42

This. My kids loved it and I am now revisiting it with the next generation Grin. graemebase.com/book/animalia/

Ahlberg books are fab

Funnybones
Burglar Bill
Cops and robbers

Avebury · 26/10/2018 17:17

Not a picture book but The Book with No Pictures is well loved in this household

NWQM · 26/10/2018 19:24

The dinosaur who popped Christmas - massive hit in our house

OnlyGlowingSlightly · 26/10/2018 20:16

I second 'The day the crayons quit'

Moomintrolls picture books are a big hit here. Unfortunately the collection is out of stock with book people, but The Book About Moomin, Mymble and Little My is fab

Winnie's Big Bad Robot is great fun

The barefoot books are lovely e.g.
The Barefoot Book of Children
or
The Barefoot Book of Earth Tales

Slightly unusual, but a great book for this age is Tiny: The Invisible World of Microbes

Or there's an usborne 'See Inside' book for every interest. The only thing is that they are popular presents, especially space and castles, so you could be doubling up a gift.

If you want something really special, the Robert Sabuda popup books are stunning, eg Peter Pan

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 26/10/2018 20:59

My 5yo loves

The Mog Books
Funnybones
Where on Earth is the Moon
You Can't Take an Elephant on the Bus
The Dinosaur that Pooped Christmas
The Snowman and the Snowdog

parrotonmyshoulder · 26/10/2018 21:03

Stuck
The incredible book eating boy
Invisible Fred
(All Oliver Jeffers)

My DS LOVES the ‘Kipper’ books by Mick Inkpen.

You Choose is wonderful and popular with a lot of kids.

losingthemind · 27/10/2018 09:48

Man on the Moon by Simon Bartram is a lovely alternative book for that age:

Both my dc (boy and girl) loved it

Pigletpoglet · 27/10/2018 09:49

Reception teacher here - this is always my class's favourite of the year, and it's wintery too! The illustrations are beautiful.

Chicken, Chips and Peas (Fast Fox, Slow Dog)
by Allan Ahlberg

There are four in this series and have remained firm favourites in our house for boys and girls alike for the last 15 years.

Stuck by Oliver Jeffers

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 27/10/2018 10:03

The Robert Sabuda pop up books really are gorgeous. If you're not familiar with them you might think "pop up" equals book for toddler but these books would be wasted on a child younger than 5 imo. They're not cheap but beautiful and definitely something to keep. I've bought two for myself Smile.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 27/10/2018 13:03

Oliver Jeffers books are lovely, I loved reading those with my son at that age.

takeyourcanvasbag · 27/10/2018 19:28

I was going to say Stuck as well! My dd finds it absolutely hilarious.

Abzs · 27/10/2018 19:37

My boy loves the Tim Hopwood illustrated books of songs. We have Wonderful World, Sing in the rain, and Moon River.

Joinourclub · 27/10/2018 19:39

We love this book:

The Jolly Christmas Postman is brilliant or the original Jolly Postman.

(I just typed Jolly Pistman by accident, that would be a very different book! )
