I want to buy a book but not something they probably already have-Julia Donaldson etc

Can anyone recommends something a bit different?! It’s for a boy but not a particularly boy-ish boy if that makes a difference?!

Definitely Oliver Jeffers!! “Lost and found” is fab (there’s also a really lovely short film of it) also “Here We Are” I had a tear in my eye reading it with my 4 year old.

Sneaking in to mark my place for ideas for my niece.

Captain Flynn and the Pirate Dinosaurs and the Prince's Bedtime were popular in our house at that age.

Ds is a bit younger but the Night Gardener is a firm favourite here: www.amazon.co.uk/Night-Gardener-Terry-Fan/dp/1481439782?tag=mumsnetforum-21

If he likes animals, these are beautiful: Wild Animals of the North and Wild Animals of the South by Dieter Braun. (www.amazon.co.uk/Wild-Animals-North-Dieter-Braun/dp/1909263966)

The jolly Christmas postman. We love the original jolly postman but then DD got the Christmas one last year and loves it (and I do too)

The little boy/girl who lost their name. It's personalised and they go on a journey to find all the letters in their name. It's really special x

Richard Scarry books were always a big hit in our home. DS2 loved looking at all the pictures when he was little and then when he got older he liked reading them.

Me and my sister loved Lucy & Tom’s Christmas (Shirley Hughes) when we were that age - really gorgeous illustrations.

StitchesInTime · 27/10/2018 22:24

My 5yr old’s current favourites include:

You Choose / Just Imagine;

I'm a primary school teacher and highly recommend this list for reception age children - all high quality picture books (including many mentioned already!)

A particular favourite of mine is an author called Alexis Deacon and a book called 'Beegu' about an alien landing on earth. Very powerful message about difference.

Abneyandteal19 · 28/10/2018 04:21

Here is the year 1 list as well if he's coming up to 6 but really all the reception ones still stand for many years to come in my opinion.

I second Captain Flynn and the Pirate Dinosaurs.

MarcieBluebell · 28/10/2018 04:56

Are there any books of stories in a big book if that makes sense?

Elpheba · 28/10/2018 05:47

Supertato is another good one!

I would go for one with a good amount of text and good rhythm,

DD announced at 4.5 and a term in school that picture books are for babies and she wouldn’t entertain them to be read to her or trying to read to herself.

My son loved this book:

I still have my 1970s copy of Richard Scary’s word book.
