Waste free stocking fillers for boys

Every year I vow to not fill my boys' stocking with 'tat' and every year I fail. We have a lot of 'stuff' which I am always trying to reduce for example we don't need any more colouring crayons/pencils/books and I'm really trying to not buy small pointless plastic crap like Smash Ums or Superzings. They are 10, 7 and 5 and have quite small stockings which does restrict what I buy. We will also be away for Christmas so I need to bare that in mind. They are into gaming so Fortnite. Minecraft etc but also still love their Lego. Middle DS will be getting Lego for his main present. I try to get all 3 the same for their stockings and this usually includes pants, socks, a Smiggle pen, keyring, sweets and a blind bag Lego Mini Figure. Does anyone have any tips for not plastic tat, useful but still fun and transportable abroad type stocking fillers please? Their stockings are too small for books but I could roll up magazines or comics each. I always end up buying stuff just for the sake of it and then regret it so new ideas very gratefully received!

If it's not too outing, where will you be for Christmas? And where in your holiday does Christmas fall?

Pigeonpost · 21/10/2018 16:08

We will be somewhere snowy for Christmas but only away for 3 nights, right over Christmas.

Things that they will need while you're away and can always use new ones of - fun pants, socks, jumper, gloves, t-shirts, puzzle books, top trumps, wooden puzzles, comics
Take some cheap gift bags for fillers which are too big for the stockings. B&M had some gift sets of small Star Wars (I think) shower gels which you could separate out. Well worth a wander round B&M / Home Bargains for ideas

Could you do an edible stocking? Fill it with sweets, chocolates etc. I know it won't be 100% waste free (wrappers etc) but at least it won't be plastic tat.

I don’t count lego, schleich and collectibles as tat because they have good value second hand and will get passed on eventually.

T-shirts, hats, scarves, gloves, funky socks all roll up small.

Bath bombs (maybe too heavy though)

I always do a rolled up comic/coloring/sticker book as a space filler.

Packet of cards and teach them some old fashioned games

Rubiks cubes of various sizes and types? My 6 yr old loves his rubiks pyramid.

I buy all ours in the UK, but then it has to come home in suitcases. DS1 is getting a can of coke (there is no way Mummy would buy that, do Santa must be real!!), sweets, chocolate bath bombs. All stuff that will get used before we travel back. I can get a slightly rolled paperback book in ours, so those, pants and socks and a puzzle book.

Is the stocking too small for a Michelin I-Spy book? They're great and especially useful for travelling!

My 10 and 7yos have/would like stuff like:
Mini wind up or solar power torch
Laser pointer (So much fun!)
Enamel pin badges, patches or skate stickers
Thin Graphic novels
Worry dolls
Plush emoji key rings
Wooden or metal puzzle games
A penknife
Gloves
Mini travel game versions of games like cluedo, battleships or Pictionary
A cool pack of normal cards
Exploding kittens or fluxx (though my 7yo struggles with fluxx)
Nanoblocks (though that’s def plastic tat!)

Though truly they’d like superzings..

Oh my god do they still make those? I LOVED them when I was a kid!
