Something nicer than biscuits but not too expensive

We always get our neighbours and the lady across the road a box of biscuits or shortbread for Christmas.

This year the lady across the road looked after our cats whilst we were on holiday and we left her a card and a box of chocolates to say thank you. She thanked us for the chocolates but said she didn’t eat them and would rather our DD’s had them. We want to get her something nicer than the usual box of biscuits/shortbread but don’t want to spend a lot more as we know she won’t accept it.

Don’t want to get her chocolates in case she a) really doesn’t eat it and b) won’t accept and give it to our DD’s. I know she drinks stout but not sure about anything else. She’s eccentric, early 60’s, from a farming background and loves her garden but doesn’t like spending lots of time gardening.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

Florentines?

Branleuse · 07/10/2018 21:50

She fed your cats while you were on holiday and got chocolates?

Wine? Gin? Variety pack of beer?

Carrie76 · 07/10/2018 21:50

How about a bird feeder that sticks to her window?

SleightOfMind · 07/10/2018 21:53

You could get her a gift card for your nearest garden centre or nursery?

Magik1 · 07/10/2018 21:53

Macarons?

AdaColeman · 07/10/2018 21:56

A bowl planted up with spring bulbs.

A box of stollen squares/mince pies.

AdaColeman · 07/10/2018 21:58

Home made chutney.

Thanks some fab ideas. Will have a look and see what I can find.

A nice pair of gardening gloves or a warm scarf. Or if you think she would prefer food, then a Dundee cake in a tin or a decorated Christmas cake.

Or just a crate of stout Grin

An orchid?

buckeejit · 07/10/2018 22:11

Honestly, I'd get her a crate of stout. It's consumable and wanted, hard to pass on & heavy for her to carry herself when getting groceries.

ShatnersBassoon · 07/10/2018 22:14

Stout and mince pies. I like the sound of her.

SleightOfMind · 07/10/2018 22:14

I also think a crate of her favourite stout would be lovely.

Bumbumtaloo · 07/10/2018 22:19

She is lovely, has always been really nice to us and loves our DD’s. She’s had a bit of trouble where we live (small rural village) and some of the people have been complete arseholes to her and us but that’s a whole other thread

It doesn’t even have to be food or drink, we just wanted to get her something nicer than we usually give but not so OTT she won’t accept it.

A home made stout advent calendar and give it to her on the 1st Grin

What about taking her out for a Christmas drink? She sounds lovely.
