iPod Touch for DS who already has an iPad Mini

DS is 10.5 and has an iPad Mini that he got when he was 8.5. He is now saying he wants an iPod Touch and the only reason he can give me is that 'all his friends have one' Would I be mad to entertain this? I had thought an iPad Mini was a step up from the iPod?

No it would be pointless. Does he have a phone?

Reaa · 14/09/2018 14:56

Totally pointless IPad mini is a step up from iPod touch.

Perhaps an old iPhone like an phone5c would be a better option.

The iPod touch is more for listening to music and playing games on the go. I wouldn't compare to the iPad, completely different uses.

It's harder now that everything overlaps, previously it would have been like the difference between an MP3 or basic phone and a TV for example, everything has a screen these days so ignore that when comparing.

Well, we had an Ipad mini, then bought the DCs Ipod touches about 3 years ago and the Ipad literally never got used again.

I think it's a 'generational' thing possibly. I know personally I think it's a waste but I can see he'd probably use it a lot more than the iPad mini, because (in his mind) it's 'cooler' and also because it's that bit more portable.

I have neither an iPad or iPod so maybe we'll get it and I'll take the iPad for myself!

Surely an iPod touch is much more portable? Is it the same size as an iPhone? Different to an iPad mini for sure

reluctantbrit · 14/09/2018 17:17

I wouldn’t do it as he may wants/needs a phone soon.

DD got DH’s old iPhone 6 when he upgraded and without the sim it was basically an iPod with a decent screen size. She was 10.5 and we got her a SIM card 1/2 year later.

Without the sim she used it for music/audiobooks, play games and used the camera - a lot.

Would that be a possibility?

RSTera · 14/09/2018 17:19

They don't make ipods anymore do they?

LIZS · 14/09/2018 17:21

Will he not want a phone for secondary school? Ds has had 2 ipod touches but a subsequent phone made it redundant.

ballseditupforever · 14/09/2018 17:56

My dd is 10. She had the iPod touch first, then iPad. We bought her a iPhone for her birthday so touch is redundant. They like it because it's portable. It's different I think. My younger son was very excited to get his hands on it even though he already had a tablet.

Justgivemeasoddingname · 14/09/2018 23:40

My ds 13 has both and uses his iPod 80% of the time. To be fair his iPad mini is slower and his iPod has 64gb so is pretty good but I'm still amazed he chooses the smaller screen for stuff. He's got a Samsung phone which he will use for photos more but still takes iPod instead of phone out to take pics and vids etc I think the editing is a better feature. My ds would say yes.

Meet0nTheIedge · 15/09/2018 08:55

Not only did the DCs abandon the Ipads (we had a mini and a normal), once DH and I had newer Iphones we abandoned the Ipads too, they have gathered dust for the last few years. However I do agree that they will want phones at secondary school - mine have both Ipod and Iphone now. The Ipods do still get used - they are allowed them in their rooms at night to listen to music but not their phones.

macnab · 15/09/2018 18:49

Thanks everyone he's not starting secondary school until 2020 and won't be getting a phone until then (despite begging for one!) so maybe the iPod Touch will be a good alternative.

Does he have a phone? If you are looking at buying one of them shortly for senior school then maybe just get that. Otherwise the iPod touch will be redundant as soon as he gets a phone. You could even get a phone now and use without a sim so it it like an iPod touch.
