Meat to go with turkey

My mum and stepdad are coming this year and they really like the 'proper' turkey dinner. Unfortunately DH hates turkey. They've happily had many different joints at previous Christmases but for various reasons I'd like to make it extra nice for them this year so I'm going to do a turkey crown but what would go nicely with it so DH can enjoy his dinner too?

We have a ham joint on Xmas eve so I guess that's off!

I'm not a big fan of turkey either - I usually eat mostly ham at the xmas dinner. I don't think any meat actually goes with turkey other than ham.

Could you do an extra roast like a small pork fillet with stuffing?

I always do a ham for Xmas eve and Boxing Day, siphon a bit off for Xmas day for the turkey haters.

I cook a massive ham on Christmas Eve and serve that with the turkey. Makes a lovely turkey, ham and leek pie afterwards too.

It doesn't have to go with turkey. Just get what he likes

AndreasFault · 24/08/2018 23:17

Slow roast belly pork - goes well with turkey or stand alone

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 25/08/2018 05:00

Oooooooh! Any chance of the pie recipe AnneEyhtMeyer ?

Alanamackree · 25/08/2018 06:17

Turkey is quite bland and pairs well enough with other meats. Just pick something he likes.

Ham

We always have turkey and beef in my house

RoseMartha · 27/08/2018 21:55

Chicken or beef

BangingOn · 27/08/2018 22:14

I often do a slow cooked leg of lamb as I’m not fussed by turkey and would rather cook something I actually enjoy. I’m not sure whether it goes with turkey, but I don’t eat them together anyway.

Why not let your DH choose what he’d like?

VanillaMapleSyrup · 27/08/2018 22:21

A nice chicken?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 27/08/2018 22:42

Follow - I just chop up leftover turkey and gammon, sweat off some leaks, add some cheese sauce and gravy (yes both!) and top with some rough puff pastry. Delicious!

Ham

I do a ham - either cook it in cola, Nigella-style, or in apple juice with various spices. It's lovely cold with bubble & squeak and pickles, and any leftover bits make a lovely pie with the scrappier turkey pickings.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 28/08/2018 08:56

My parents always do turkey and beef.

DanSullivan · 29/08/2018 07:47

We have turkey and a gammon joint.

Youvegotafriendinme · 29/08/2018 08:11

oohyoudevilyou the Nigella ham you suggested, is it the cola one you do? Never done one before and wanted to do one this year

NicoAndTheNiners · 29/08/2018 08:13

I'm not keen on turkey and am planning on lamb this Christmas.

NicoAndTheNiners · 29/08/2018 08:15

I also do a boxing day pie with leftovers. I use shortcrust pastry and then just layer food in. Stuffing, cheesy leeks and meat normally.
