What is that stringy shiny stuff that we used to put on Christmas Trees called?

Help! DS and I are trying to put together a Christmas Quiz.
I am SURE that that stringy shiny stuff that we used to put on Christmas Trees back in the 1970s/80s had a special name so thought it would make a good answer for the quiz...but I can't remember what it was called!
Does anyone know what I am on about? It's like tinsel (but NOT tinsel), it comes in long, fine strands that you just kind of drape over the branches. My mum still has some knocking about that she uses to re-string equally ancient baubles.
I think it ends in "a" but that's as far as my brain will go...

I always thought it was called tinsel... never too old to learn something new I guess. Now if I could only find Christmas tree lights that twinkle rather than blink and flash like a bloody disco!!
