Stockings - who gets one ?

didireallysaythat · 17/12/2017 22:27

DS2 (7) possibly a believer. He gets one
DS1 (11) no longer a believer but going along for his brother's sake. He gets one
DH1 gets one but mainly because he always gets socks for Xmas so I stuff one sock into the other and add some chocolate.

I don't get one. Of course I don't. I'd be buying presents for myself. I wonder if the kids think that's strange ?

(Stocking presents are from santa, everything else comes from someone. No letters written, no lists, we make it up as we go along)

My husband and both kids and I all get a stocking. I do my husband and he does mine. He was a bit crap about it first few years but does really good stocking presents now.

Stockings were always a very exciting part of Christmas growing up so I've kept hold of the traditions we had growing up.

Iprefercoffeetotea · 18/12/2017 16:28

DS gets one even though he's 15. I always got one as a teen, too. I don't know if DH did but I think it's nice to have the crinkle of a stocking even if you know it's not from Father Christmas.

Gammeldragz · 18/12/2017 16:30

Just the kids (until they leave home). I did DH one one year but most of the stuff never got used. He wouldn't do me one, so adults don't get them here (I'd love a stocking!).

dementedpixie · 18/12/2017 16:38

We just do kids ones dd 14 and ds11. Never done adult ones

TheHolidayArmadillo · 18/12/2017 16:39

Everyone gets a stocking. I do DH's and he does mine, and we both get bits and bobs for the DC (officially from Santa).

The cat is getting one too, but one of the Pets at Home ones so I just had to buy it Grin

Stompythedinosaur · 18/12/2017 16:58

What on earth would you put in a duck's stocking!?!

This is a question which plagues my festive season. I woukd not have done them stockings but the dc were insistant they be included. Generally I put a sweetie cone in but with meal worms rather than sweets.

Arrowfanatic · 18/12/2017 17:36

Just the children DD8, DS6 and DD5. No point doing for adults imo.

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 18/12/2017 18:51

Both DC get a stocking even though the eldest one doesn’t believe in Father Christmas anymore. I also get one. Mine has nail varnish, chocolate, socks and mascara. So all stuff I get anyway but meh sod it. DC get way more stuff and better stuff than me. FC brings stocking and 1 gift the rest of the presents are from me/other family.

MummyBearToOne1988 · 18/12/2017 20:12

My son gets a stocking from FC on the end of his bed to open first thing whilst I wipe the sleepy dust from my eyes and the dog has her own which my son wraps the doggy presents so he feels he's involved with the magic of Xmas.

ScrubbyGarden · 18/12/2017 22:47

We seem to generally have more adults than children, and everyone gets a stocking, and everyone over about 12 contributes- on Xmas eve after the littlies are in bed we divide up into teams stuffing each other's stockings, armed with booze and carols. There is much scurrying from room to room with Very Secret bags of bits and pieces, and the scissors and tape are in hot demand. I love it!
In fact, one branch of the family won't play, so we have been known to declare a stocking occasion on a different day, just because an enthusiastic collection of stocking makers have gathered.

didireallysaythat · 19/12/2017 06:51

scrubby that sounds ace ! Love the idea of spreading the stocking admin.

Why can’t your DH do you one if you do him one? My DH does me one. Things like my favourite bath oil, gin minature, a paperback I would enjoy etc.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 19/12/2017 07:16

Everyone does. I do DD and DH, he does mine and chips in a few little bits for DD.

educatingarti · 19/12/2017 07:16

Our family tradition is to have one large stocking for all the adults. Everyone ( well all the women - wife work anyone) puts in bits for the others with name written on the paper. It is always the person's name, not 'Mum' 'Aunty' etc as of course they are all from Santa. Children and teenagers get their own stocking done by parents.

Chaosofcalm · 19/12/2017 09:23

Everyone. For us that is me, DH, toddler DD and the cat.

stoplickingthetelly · 19/12/2017 09:30

We all get one. Dh does mine, I do his, we do kids between us. My mum is coming to stay so she'll have one too.

speakout · 19/12/2017 09:33

My OH doesn't really get the gift giving thing.

Just not part of his make up.

CarrotVan · 19/12/2017 10:02

Stockings have been a big deal in my family for as long as I can remember and we all carry it on in our own homes. Everyone I’m with at Christmas gets a stocking (handmade). All of my sisters collect stocking fillers all year round and post bits to other family members. So although I have some things for my own stocking I also have surprises from my sisters and DH.

I also do a stocking for my MIL (the kids insist) and everyone sends bits for my parents to whoever will be with them at Christmas to sort out

DH never had a stocking as a child and is a convert

fleshmarketclose · 19/12/2017 12:25

Everyone including the dog gets a stocking here, all too old to believe in FC. I do all the stockings apart from my own and the dog's. Dh does the dog's as he's much more generous and dd helps him do my stocking.

pallisers · 19/12/2017 12:30

everyone including the dog.

I used to let dh do my stocking but took over a few years ago - I get myself some nice small treats. DH will pick up a few things too and put them in the pile.

stockings are our main present now - we don't really do big stuff for the kids as they are teens.

nuttyknitter · 19/12/2017 12:59

I still do them for our adult children, and have added in their partners as they've joined the family. I think my DH thinks it's slightly bonkers, but I love finding interesting little bits and pieces for them.

Codlet · 19/12/2017 13:01

Just the DC in our house.

321namechange · 19/12/2017 14:57

Just DS (no longer believes) at end of his bed for first thing on waking.

kath6144 · 19/12/2017 15:17

All four of us, DS and DD are 20 and 17.5, plus dog has one too. They supposedly come from Santa, but DS helped me stuff them (old socks) last year when the other 2 were ill!!!!

I buy for DH, and generally most of kids stuff (edibles, smellies, jokey gifts, socks, underwear, alcohol, gift card, lottery ticket etc).

DH buys for mine, generally smellies and edibles.

We all generally buy bits for dog's stocking.

I used to do one for my mum when she was still with us and came at Xmas. PIL coming this year, if DH wants to buy them stuff then they will have one too.
