Books for an 11yo girl

Every year I buy my daughter some new books to try. She's not the most enthusiastic of readers, and usually when she likes an author will read all of their books. But she's not very adventurous with books, so tends to stick to the same books from the school library.

So any ideas for books that she might like please?

In the past she has liked:

  • hunger games
  • David Williams (too old for that now)
  • Harry Potter (but never finished the series)
  • Helen dunnore

Books she doesn't like are:

  • Michael morpurgo
  • Enid Blyton etc...

Try the Kate Meryon books. Can't remember the names, one might have been star light? My dd loved them at that age.

I just got my 11 year old DD this:

www.amazon.co.uk/Etiquette-Espionage-Number-Finishing-School/dp/1907411585/?tag=mumsnetforum-21

It does not look like amazing literature but it looks really good fun (and I plan to read it too).

School for good and evil series is popular with my 11 yo as is Neil Gaiman such as Coraline.

Hebenon · 09/12/2017 16:46

DD loved the School for Good and Evil too.

Mulch · 09/12/2017 16:47

I loved noughts and crosses series as a teen

Try Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter

Also came on to say Warrior cats or School for good and Evil. Scarlet and Ivy books by Sophie Cleverley also went down well here.

My 11 year old DD is a reluctant reader but has enjoyed the varjak paw books and is now ready chronicles of ancient darkness
Although they are a little young she still enjoys the Atticus Claw series

My daughter adores Warrior Cats- and if she does take to them there's millions of them.

My DD and to be fair DS have just ploughed through very quickly the first four of the Magesterium series, fifth one still to be published.

DD now asked for Miss Peregrins school for Peculiar Chidren

Sally Lockheart books (Philip Pullman - Victorian mystery/melodrama)
Song of the Lioness series (Tamora Pierce - mediaeval feminist fantasy)
Good Omens (Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett - read it before it comes on the telly)

Murder most unladylike series, Percy jackson

alletik · 09/12/2017 19:05

Thank you. I will look at some of those esp Sally Lockhart mysteries.

Have already tried (and failed) to get my dc into northern lights, which I'm gutted about as Philip Pullman was my lecturer at uni, and we all adored him.

Will also try Percy Jackson. Good ideas here.

My ten, soon to be eleven year old, is loving Dork Diaries at the moment.

Unfortunately my 12 y.o. DD is refusing Phillip Pullman books on the grounds that his books are ‘classic’. She never like M. Morpurgo, either and steered clear from Enid Blyton.
I second Scarlet and Ivy series - these books are great (or so I hear).
DD saw the Peculiar Children and was terrified to read the book - the 30something me loved it though :-)
