Stocking fillers for adults

Anyone got any good ideas for little presents or stocking fillers?

Booze, chocs, toiletries, socks...that's all I can think of and I need inspiration!

I've just been shopping for my DH's and MIL's stockings. Items include: xmas chocolates, socks, little notepads, colourful pens, hand cream (for her), collar stays (for him), box of quizzes/riddles.

I've just bought an on the go coffee mug thing (the kind that keeps the coffee warm) for DH. It might also encourage him to take a coffee with him when he goes to work instead of spending a fortune in Starbucks!

Crossword/wordsearch/suduko book.
A comb.
Book of stamps.
Lottery ticket.
Mug with tea bags/coffee/hot chocolate.
Packet of seeds for the garden.
A bookmark.
A diary.

Umbrella
Travel mug
Wrist warmers
Water bottle
Fold up shopping bag
Torch

I keep a list. DH is getting a poncey Parmesan grater, a new set of drill bits, Elizabeth Shaw mints and bubble bath.

Dh has got a woolly hat, umbrella with gear stick handle, a little bendy man thing that is a book light and phone stand, a Chicago Bears keyring, a Juergen Klopp bobble head.

Previously I’ve got him a Starbucks gift card, bookmark, Lego baseball figure, photo keyring.

He has got me a multi screwdriver and a Swiss Army knife thing in the past which I was pleased to get as has been very useful.

Stockings are my favourite part, not sure it will even remotely fit!

I thought I was doing well with my DH's stocking until I gathered all the bits together to wrap. I tend to go mostly edible. So far he's got:

A few bars of Lindt mint chocolate
After eight type things
Chocolate coffee beans
Form Card
Magniband

Planning to add:
Beer
Chocolate peanuts
Eiger Bat Light if it's not too big

I'd normally get something little to build, like a nanoblocks thing but he hasn't made his shark from last year yet.

youokay do you know if there's anywhere cheaper than Firebox to get spreadable beer? Sounds great (well, disgusting) but I don't want to pay £15 for it.**

I'm going to go all Scrooge here...

... But I really, really wish grown adults didn't do stockings. This year, due to building work, I have gone on strike and am buying one big present for each couple instead of worrying and working my ass off to buy 20 different small items that end up as clutter/landfill.

I just think that when you are over the age of about 15, the expectation that people will buy you a massive horde of presents seems a bit... excessive. I know it's meant nicely, but I actually find it quite stressful to find places for loads of different gifts, or sad just to dump them straight into a charity shop. I'd rather have one, beautifully thoughtful thing.

I agree with you whiskeyowl - I was assuming this was for within a couple or very close family only?

We don’t buy adult presents in my family, but dh and I do each other a stocking as I never had one growing up and he made me one our first Christmas together so now it’s a tradition! We get each other useful things or top ups of hair bands/socks etc and treat food. Or replace things like key fobs and torches. I would never want anyone else to do me one who didn’t know me as well

DD's get a stocking and they're 9 and 11. Everyone else gets a present they want or need. How do you all find the time and the money?

Genuine question, that was. Not meaning it to sound as pointed as it reads.

Our stockings tend to be consumables and useful things. Kids and adults. Geeky socks, drinks, sweets that sort of thing,

Well I’ve kind of explained in my post. And, like all things, it’s only a thing if you want it to be! All completely optional. In answer to your question in doesn’t take a lot of time or money, I got most of it in Tesco in bits and pieces. A couple of things I might get from Amazon, like sports team stuff. Dh and I don’t tend to buy each other stuff outside of Christmas as we’re on a budget, so we make a thing of it. It’s mainly stuff he can eat or drink on the day, or is useful in some way. Most of the time we don’t get each other “big” presents, though this year I’ve saved up to replace his broken Kindle.

I only do one for my DH, and now my DD, but it's little things I'd buy him anyway just by putting them in s stocking they look less rubbish and random 👍

We all do a stocking for each other in our family but it’s me, DH and DS. I felt quite strongly that I wanted the early morning stocking opening to be a family affair of all of us digging into our stockings and enjoying gifts together rather than DS opening his on his own without that sense of shared excitement. Especially now he is a teenager and knows that Father Christmas is a myth, he likes helping each parent choose gifts for the other. I really didn’t want to create a sense that Christmas was just about him receiving, and with an only child, I was worried about that.

Disclaimer: DH and I choose as stocking gifts things we know the other uses and likes anyway. So I will get hand-cream, pens, etc; he gets posh coffee, socks, etc. Nothing that doesn’t get used over the course of the year to come.

TheOnly - we are much the same with an only child. It's so lovely for it to be a shared experience and not just all about her. Adults have always had stockings in my family, but not much in the way of bigger presents. Although she still believes in Father Christmas, she knows that the adult stockings are bought by other adults and enjoys helping me shop for others. Stockings are my favourite bit of Christmas Day. Even when I was a child, I was nearly as excited about watching my brother and parents open theirs as I was about opening my own.

I did gently enquire whether my (technically adult) sons might feel that it was beneath their dignity to have stockings still. They disagreed. The Christmas morning pile-in on each other's beds to open them is definitely still A Thing.

Spam cheapest I can find it is £9.99! I'm probably going to leave it as it probably is disgusting!!!!
