Does anyone do this and know why this is a tradition? I love the idea of it! Can anyone suggest me some stories to start off this year please?

Yes, we've done it as long as I can remember. Nice glass of sherry, or similar, in the evening on Christmas Eve. Was it originally a Victorian tradition, or earlier? I'm not sure. I'm always excited to hear of others doing this as I don't hear of it much in recent years.

Did you watch the old BBC Christmas Eve ghost stories? Whistle and I'll Come to You is a good one particularly (M.R. James of course)

M.R. James obviously. I prefer short stories, and have a few compilations, including Christmas ghost stories. Though I read Dark Matter one year, and even Wilkie Collins many years ago.

Thank you so much endehors! I love the idea of a quiet scary read after the DCs have gone to bed!

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. My absolute favourite ghost story.

The Small Hand by Susan Hill - I do love a Christmas ghost story.
