What's in a traditional British Christmas stocking?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 02/12/2017 15:42

I am putting together a smallish, not too expensive, Christmas stocking for a friend.

They are from another country and, from conversations we have had about Christmas, Christmas traditions, things that are typically British etc., I am pretty confident that they would like a traditional British Christmas stocking.

What would you put in that? I need inspiration please Xmas Grin.

I don't normally do Christmas stockings for anyone so am a bit stumped past a satsuma and some walnuts!

Chocolate coins & toiletries could be useful ideas - thank you!

Probably not toys as it's for an adult.

A pack of Top Trumps!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 02/12/2017 15:49

Ah, gadgets - actually a small torch might be a good gift for them! (Part of their walk to work is very badly lit).

Thank you for the ideas Xmas Grin.

Cards
Dominoes
A brain teaser type puzzle
Cool socks
Stationary or a pocket diary

autumncolour · 02/12/2017 15:53

Orange, chocolate coins. Small novelties, games puzzles, etc. And a sugar mouse at the bottom - absolutely essential.

lorisparkle · 02/12/2017 15:58

I always had a toothbrush, flannel, tube of smarties, satsuma, nuts, fun stationary, tights and when I got older I had a miniature (baileys or tia Maria usually!) and liqueur chocolates. the stocking was very functional but i loved it and even though I am in my forties I still get it now - delivered via my dh at church on Christmas Eve!

GingerbreadMa · 02/12/2017 16:01

Satsuma in the toe. White chocolate, lego, socks, pants, toothbrush, small gifts (mini lego or cosmetics) and a book.

yawning801 · 02/12/2017 16:02

A lump of coal Grin and a satsuma in the toe.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 02/12/2017 16:04

Just what everyone has said really, plus a candy cane!

Other bits...

Bath bomb
Fancy nail polish (red glitter)
Christmas or fluffy socks
Hot chocolate stirer
Mini Santa/snowball/brussels sprouts chocolates
Heated hand warmer (Card factory have some reusable ones for 99p)

MountainDweller · 02/12/2017 16:05

I always got a shiny coin in the very bottom of mine - initially 5p but I think it went up to 20p when the 20p coins first came out!

AdaColeman · 02/12/2017 16:07

A Lindt Father Christmas sticking out of the top.

Party poppers, streamers. paper hat.

Nail varnish, lipstick, travel size shampoo etc. hand cream, hair clip, Christmas fun earrings, small bottle of scent.

Bar of chocolate. Tiny box of chocolates. Sachets of hot chocolate drink. Woolly gloves or socks. Keyring.

MrsMcW · 02/12/2017 16:10

Crackers poking out the top!

oldsilver · 02/12/2017 16:18

Shell nuts, notepad.

Graphista · 02/12/2017 16:20

Satsuma
Nuts
Small selection pack
Colouring book & pencils
Pack of cards
Hat/scarf/gloves MUST be a matching set in a horrible colour/design
Hair accessories
Smellies (again more naff the better)
Small toy or game (as its for a grown up could be a Rubik's cube, mini solitaire/chess/draughts, slinky)

How about this:

If I was getting a grown-up stocking, in addition to things already mentioned, I would be chuffed to get a 'fancy' pen, like those in the Works that are about a pound. Assuming they are female.

MrsSchadenfreude · 02/12/2017 16:27

I usually do one for my Mum and put in a little bottle of wine, a can of ready mixed G & T, Christmas socks, a pen and small notebook, a novel, satsuma, nuts, chocolate coins and a small box of nice chocolates. Plus M & S mini toiletries and a tiny bottle of their Florentina perfume. Maybe patterned tights? Nice soap, bath bomb. Pants?!

GoldilocksAndTheThreePears · 02/12/2017 16:29

We always had a satsuma, bag of choc coins, a thorntons choc lolly, lipbalm, tiny diary, socks, things like pencil and notebook, bookmark, basically the little things you wouldn't get for yourself.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 02/12/2017 16:30
