Mine is getting a very neat mini food processor (keen cook), a book well, or several and a portrait of our family, framed.

Got a few small ideas from this thread but struggling for a "main" present.

She's not a demanding person as such BUT he and dad are not at all materialistic and are comfortably enough off now that if they do want something they just get it! So that rules out books/DVDs and the like as they buy them as soon as they're out.

Also for health reasons she doesn't wear jewellery, make up or perfume and can only use a (very cheap basic) brand of toiletries. She IS fussy with clothes plus her weight fluctuates a fair bit. The house is already COVERED in family photos and that's not a great gift as that was her job and nobody takes as good pics as she does. So...I'm fairly stumped.

I'm debating theatre tokens IF they can be used on the day as she is dads carer and so doesn't book things in advance as it depends how he's doing AND on her own health. She doesn't go to the cinema.

Worse can't even ask as she just says "oh a nice card is all I need" Grin she's just being awkward really Smile

Graphista - how close do you live? Would it be possible to take her out for a really nice lunch somewhere? Give her a “voucher” that you’ve made yourself and then you can pick a date nearer the time.

God, I'm 42 and I'd love any of these presents. Almost certainly more than my mum (70s) would Grin

A volume of poetry about Mary Magdalen. She's quite religious and she loves poetry, so hoping I'm onto a winner. I heard about the book on a podcast about the poet, so am going to get DH to download the podcast onto a CD to give to her with it.

I don't know what to buy my mum. She's 89, vascular dementia but she still recognises me and understands a present. She also has very poor eyesight. What do you buy someone like this who needs nothing.

LesLavandes

Could you buy her a lovely hand cream and give her a hand massage when you visit her? She might appreciate the closeness, the touch and the scent......

Lavandes, something audio-based? Music? A soundscape of some kind? Spoken word (poetry, drama... sorry if that's totally not useful but I don't know what her comprehension/ability to follow speech/narrative is).

Leslavandes sorry to hear about your mum. I find my FiL who has dementia really enjoys some sweets, his favourite is Turkish Delight.

Thank you Calzone and Rhiannon. The problem is that I don't live in same country and so a hand massage would be really infrequent. I have bought her all sorts of toiletries before and they are unused. I would buy her music as she was a musician. It is a great idea but she is taken out of her room for most of day and only there for sleeping

leslavandes how about giving/ sending her some lavender bags to freshen up her wardrobe/ draws? Depending on her dementia, you can get specially made dementia blankets, which can help with anxiety.
Or a warm scarf? I know some older people can really feel the cold even in super heated homes. Last year I gave my dad a merino wool padded chair cushion (has padded back rest too) as my poor old dad is very underweight feels the cold terribly and because he's so bony found sitting in many chairs really uncomfortable, the cushion keeps his bony bum warm, and comfy! Could she listen to audio books at night? Not sure if any of these are helpful, but I'll keep thinking!
