Christmas presents for 17 year old girl

I'm buying a present via my local police Christmas tree appeal and I've been told I have to buy something for a 17 year old girl. I'll be spending up to about £30.

If you have a daughter/niece that age, please could you give me some ideas?

It's difficult when you won't know her tastes. I would usually say makeup/nail varnish but what if she's not into that hmmm. Could you go chocolates and a shopping centre voucher that she can spend in any retail store?

anyoldname76 · 21/11/2017 22:38

my dd is 16, shes having a new jacket and some other clothes, pitch perfect 1 and 2, make up set, a ukulele, earphones, jewellery set, adult colouring book, 5d diamond art set, perfume, hot water bottle and a new travel mug

Isadora2007 · 21/11/2017 23:06

A nice mug, luxury hot chocolate and marshmallows. Then a Costa voucher for the rest.

A toilet bag with smellies. Jack wills or similar.

Soft bed socks and a voucher for new look.

Clothes like pjs. but with a gift receipt

Some great ideas, thanks. I'm not sure whether to go for it and buy an Urban Decay eyeshadow palette rather than lots of smaller things.

I was about to say my Dd16 with lots of 17yo friends are all asking for Urban Decay Eyeshadow Palletts.

KC225 · 22/11/2017 00:53

Kindle is 30 quid on black Friday. Maybe more practical than an eye shadow kit especially if she doesn't wear make up.

Stickerrocks · 22/11/2017 09:35

Urban Decay have 40% off a Naked Smoking Eye palette today only, bringing it down to a rather attractive £23.70 from £39.50.

Bella8 · 22/11/2017 11:17

What if the girl doesn't like make up, could be a tomboy??

MyBrilliantDisguise · 22/11/2017 11:22

I know that's a problem, that she might not like make up. But then I assume there will be more than one 17 year old girl on their lists and they will have some idea of their interests. I could buy anything at all and have someone say "They might not like it", whether it's chocolate, make up, DVDs, clothes or whatever. I'm just trying to think of a nice present and usually prefer to get something for the full price rather than lots of small things, because I think it's easier for a girl that age to treat herself to a small gift rather than to a more expensive one.

Oh I've misunderstood as I thought you were just buying for somebody in specific. I didn't realise that they take a description of what you've bought and then dish it out accordingly to suit tastes. That's much better than means you can buy pretty much anything.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 22/11/2017 11:27

Yes, they just tell me "17 year old girl" and I hand in a gift that's not wrapped, so they can make sure everyone gets something suitable and of the same value.

That Naked Palette (the cheaper one) is very dark, isn't it? And three pink shades, too. I'm not sure what kind of colouring you'd need for that.

A kindle is not a very good idea as the girl may not have funds to buy the books or even access to the internet/person to buy it in the first place.

Bella8 · 22/11/2017 16:19

I'd go nail varnishes/lip glosses and smellies. Don't think I'd do a palette as too hard to get the right shades...

Bella8 · 22/11/2017 16:21

I'm sure the girl will be extremely grateful with what ever she gets though as it's the thought that counts and it's a very nice thing your doing op. I make a shoe box up for a homeless person most years and it's just a nice thing to do to know you're giving a little where you can...

Bella8 · 22/11/2017 16:24

Thought the hot choc set and bed socks from pp was a good idea too...

SummerRoberts · 22/11/2017 16:30

If she's into makeup she'd love any of the urban decay naked palettes. That's a great idea.
Some other ideas:
Phone case from skinnydip
Adidas leggings (if that's her style)
Anything from ASOS or a gift voucher from there
Makeup from NYX/Anastasia Beverley Hills/Morphe
Paperchase gifty bits like mug or photo frame
Topshop purse or shoulder bag
PJ's from topshop/Asos/new look/river island
Charm bracelet or charms for a charm bracelet

SummerRoberts · 22/11/2017 16:36

Sorry- what an idiot- I didn't read the post properly as I got excited when I saw 17yo girl and was thinking of what the 17yo girl I know would love.
I'd go with a nice big blankety scarf from ASOS or like other people's suggestions of nice mug, cosy card, cute socks and maybe a neutral lip colour from NYX!

SummerRoberts · 22/11/2017 16:37

Costa card*

KeiraTwiceKnightley · 22/11/2017 16:41

Blanket scarf and make the rest up with Costa/Starbucks voucher. Honestly. I know a lot of girls that age (teacher and mum of teens) and that is a win with nearly every one.

whimsical1975 · 22/11/2017 18:56

So I'm thinking that you can't really go wrong with a fashionable backpack! Most teens have a backpack, whether they're girly girls or tomboys... it is sure to get used!

jocktamsonsbairn · 22/11/2017 19:40

An urban decay palette sounds like an amazing gift and I’m sure they would match it with the right person.
I agree that the kindle would be great but might not be practical as you need to pay to use it really!
What about a Boots voucher so she can get things in the sale and some bits and bobs or see if you can get a trendy label hoody or something in the BF sakes? Hair wand?
