I tend to use a christmassy candle in the living room but don't like having candles in the hall, can anyone recommend a good christmassy room spray that doesn't need to be sprayed every five minutes? I'm tempted by the White Company Winter spray but if there are any others I'd love to hear!

Following as I’m yet to find something that doesn’t need to be constantly sprayed (even White Company I’m afraid!). Maybe a plug in?

Okay I know this is totally not what you asked for but you can make your house smell amazing with a stovetop pot pourri.

Put any combination of the following in a saucepan with water and simmer on lowest possible heat:

  • Orange or citrus peel
  • Cinnamon - powder or sticks
  • Cloves
  • Cardamom pods
  • Vanilla
  • Ginger

Whatever other nice smelling items you might have in your store cupboard! Basically anything you'd put in mulled wine, gingerbread, Christmas cake etc really.

When you've finished you can leave the pot to one side reheat the manky looking mixture for the next day or two and it'll still smell nice. People that come into the house will comment how festive your house smells Grin

If you want to do the same thing at other times of year and not have such a "festive" smell just leave out the spices and include only the citrusy things - the peel and the cardamom pods, this gives more of a gorgeous "spa" smell instead.

My local garden centre has bags of scented pine cones that smell amazing, think dobbies has similar and would look great in a decorative bowl

There's a christmas (well 'winter') febreeze which is lovely. Like a sweet pine scent with citrus and spice.

In John Lewis they had some Pot Pourri and Oils to refresh (though Pot Pourri gathers dust like nobody's business)..

I have the Winter Spray from White Co and spray a load of it close up onto a bunch of cinnamon sticks - smell lasts longer then.

I put frankincense essential oil onto a damp cotton wool ball and tuck it on a radiator.

I have a pan of mulled wine that, like Bayleaves, I put on the stove every now and again. The smell fills the whole house, it's cheap, smells like essence of Christmas, and you can take a cheeky swig now and again, if you are so inclined.

M&S have a lovely one - mandarin cinnamon and clove. It seems to have sold out online but found some in the shop.
