Christmassy things to do with a baby baby

It's our first christmas with our little one (8m) and would love to do something christmassy together even though I know she's still too young to know what's going on! Any suggestions?

Take her to see the Christmas lights, let her play with the Christmas baubles on your tree.

One thing I’m glad I did is, get a beautifully illustrated copy of The Night Before Christmas and write a letter to my daughter on the front page, dated Christmas Eve 2010.

We read it every Christmas Eve now and it always makes me gulp a bit.

Lie with her beneath the Christmas tree and look up at the lights, we do that every year.

Buy a special bauble - you could let her choose (from a few you select in a shop, just assume whichever one she grabs is her choice!). Do it every year so when she leaves home she'll have a set of special baubles.

Dress her up in a Christmas pudding outfit, you can only really get away with that when they're little and pudgy :)

Downloaded ad some great music. Whether it’s choral, pop or instrumental (bells), she may really enjoy that.
Places like Card Factory will have soft toy elves etc
You could get a wooden nativity set
If you see any plastic baubles, you could let her play (supervised) Something glittery /sparkly.

I speak as someone whose baby only put up with a Christmas elf outfit twice

Newbridge silver do beautiful Christmas tree decorations that are also a frame (in Ireland but presume you can get online). I bought one for each child on their first Christmas and then took a picture of them on Christmas Day to put in it (so the first year it’s actually pictureless!). They all LOVE them now and get so excited decorating the tree when “their” decoration is taken out of the box.

They also each have a soft toy Santa/reindeer which gets extra attention every December.

all those outfits were not really about when mine were small!

You could always lay out a big sheet of paper get some Christmassy colours of safe baby paint (crayola wash away paint) and do some little hand prints or let her tread in the paint and help her do a little walk over the sheet :) it’s messy and the likelihood is she will end up covered and somehow in our disappointing world the colours will mix and make a weird brown?!? But it’ll be fun and you might get a few good prints from it and you could always frame them! :) have fun!!

Our garden centre is done up like a winter wonderland, with loads of decorations and, also, real reindeer! I think most garden centres do a similar thing, so you could take her to look.
Have Christmas carols/songs on as background music.

Do you have a pottery painting place nearby? They have lots of different things to decorate for Christmas so you could put her footprint on a ceramic bauble for instance or look on Pinterest for other painting ideas

My DD is 7.5 months and we are going to get her an ornament for the tree. We are hoping to take her to a lantern and lights event at a local zoo near Christmas. We are also going to dress her up, obviously. i

Play some Christmas carols and sing along with them, all babies love music and she might have fun clapping too!

Make her a Christmas stocking of course ~ you will get as much fun out of this as she will, only let her open/play with it while you are with her though mind.

Make a Christmas mobile, glittery stars or sparkling angels. Hang it somewhere where she can't grab it.

Last year DS was 5 months & we:
Made footprint cards (mistletoes & reindeer designs)
Made salt dough handprint baubles
Did a present every day of advent (this was a way of getting him used to the idea of wrap & tearing)
Made a Christmas sensory bin with different textures/scents etc
Went on a old train which had Santa on it - elves & Santa walk by & there's lots of things to take in so less pressure than passing him to a Santa
Went to a carol concert in the local park
Read Christmas stories (The Nutcracker etc)
Watched The Stick Man film (this is now our winter film of choice)
Dressed him up as an elf & penguin & present under the tree
Went to Panto (his Dad works Panto so this was the only way of us being in the same building on Christmas Eve before 8pm - he slept through a fair bit of it & was surprisingly settled)

This year he'll be 17 months so he'll be helping bake/make presents & we'll do some of the same activities as last year :)

DD took 7 month old DGS to the shops to look at Christmas displays, he loved it. This week they're going to the light switch on in Bristol.

If you can't face an entire themed costume, though, this type of thing is gorgeous and practical (and you'll probably be viewing her a lot from above/behind, at this stage, so you may as well amuse yourself too!).

Some lovely ideas above: I, too, was going to suggest a Christmas-themed sensory basket.
