Dd is 13 and has her 14th birthday in December. I am drawing a blank for her 'big' present for both Birthday and Christmas! She already has an iPad, Bluetooth speaker, iPod, phone headphones etc. She loves all things Japanese, anime, colouring, drawing, reading, anything to do with the zodiac. It's not proving hard to find her lots of smaller things, just not sure what to do for the main present.

Why does she need a “big” present? Spend the money on lots of little things if that’s what she’d prefer.

Mine rarely get a big or main present. They prefer to get all the little things that they wouldn’t really save up for. Big things like iphones they save up and buy themselves. My 14 yo in particular has always liked the fun of seeing lots of presents and unwrapping them all.

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 01/11/2017 09:51

If she likes the zodiac, would she like a telescope to look at the stars....? (just a thought)

GoldSpot · 01/11/2017 09:58

Good point really - I don't want to waste money on something big and pointless.

Someday - excellent suggestion. I will sound her out - I have a sneaking suspicion it might not get used very much, though.

Was thinking I might get her a wall print of the stars.

A camera (one of those that prints pictures)?
Tickets to a event? Comicon or anime type thing?
Amazon echo?

My dd's are a similar age (almost 12 and 14) both want a 2ds xl as their main presents, both into Pokemon and Anime type things. Dd1 loves comicon and dreams of going to Japan (maybe one day). I have also bought them a waffle maker and will do them a food hamper. You could do a food hamper of Japanese food and sweets? Or American food?

EvilCleverDog · 01/11/2017 10:06

My dd sounds the same as yours - she was 14 last week. I’m making her a big box of art supplies for her main present - the more expensive brands she’d usually buy (draw the line at the copic pens though)

So far have a glue gun, liquid latex, brush pens in all colours, metallic markers, sketch pads of all sizes, few canvases, air drying clay, charms, chains and findings for making her own jewellery and patterned tape. Will add more as I go along but it won’t take long to amount to the same price as, say, an Xbox or iPod.

ILookedintheWater · 01/11/2017 10:07

comicon for her and a friend and you: weekend in a travelodge. Great memories.

GoldSpot · 01/11/2017 10:14

These are great ideas! Comicon is a good one - she went this year and has been talking about saving for spending money. We could give her some cash towards that. I'm not sure if tickets are on sale yet?

The of art supplies is a great idea too.

Japanese sweet/food box is a good one.

She has a Polaroid camera - which she doesn't use!

I was going to suggest a portable A2 desktop drawing board it's chunky but if she's arty it should come in useful.

doodle01 · 01/11/2017 10:22

Designer gear but its more than anything else

AllBuggiedOut · 01/11/2017 10:23

DS1 was 14 in August - he asked for a fridge for his bedroom so he could keep drinks in it for when his friends come round. He loves it! And I'm guessing it'll become a beer fridge when he gets into such things :-)

Lovemusic33 · 01/11/2017 10:33

We just turn up at comicon and usually pay extra to get in early, I'm not sure if tickets are available yet but you could make your own (IOU typle thing). My dd wants a costume to wear for next years comicon. Spending money will be needed, everything's expensive at comicon as we found out this year.

GoldSpot · 01/11/2017 11:21

Drawing board is a good one.

Unfortunately she has no interest in clothes unless they are black - which doesn't leave much room. Thinking possibly a biker jacket and an anime t shirt.

Lovemusic yes - it's the spending money that is essential for Comicon! I might need to give her a 'voucher' for that as she is not a saver. Grin

Fridge suggestion is cool - I think ds might be up for that!

Urban Decay make up? You can easily spend £100+

How to draw Manga book. Set of Japanese calligraphy brushes.

Brush pens

Art course? Royal Academy do them.

AllBuggiedOut · 01/11/2017 11:52

This is the fridge we chose for DS - very pleased with it.

Lovemusic33 · 01/11/2017 15:33

Gold my dd1 isn't into clothes or make up either unless it's something really different. She likes some of the clothes from Emp (they do some cool leather jackets too, I would love one for myself). Dd1 will be saving my any money from m Christmas to spend at comicon next year Grin.

GoldSpot · 01/11/2017 15:47

Urban decay would go down well, slightly more goth than the Benefit stuff I got for her last year.

Definitely a manga colouring in book - she colours for hours - has nearly finished her Day of the Dead one!

Thanks for the link AllBuggied. Smile

Lovemusic - never heard of Emp before, will have to show it to dd, she'll love it.

Sounds like my DD1 a few years ago. Lots of scope for smaller things. On a larger scale, how about a Totoro bed?! www.warehouseofweird.co.uk/home/bedroom/totoro-bed-uk/ Has she ever been to HyperJapan? Check it out here - usually on winter and summer hyperjapan.co.uk/hello/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzvaz7ISe1wIV5hXTCh06bAi2EAAYASAAEgJFYfD_BwE

Blogwoman · 01/11/2017 18:49

Oh, also, for her Manga, does she have lovely pens? My DD progressed from Pro-Markers to Comic markers - luxurious & wonderful.

Blogwoman · 01/11/2017 18:49

Copic, not comic!

GoldSpot · 01/11/2017 22:18

Oh my god - that bed!! She would go crazy for that! She has a space under her cabin bed - would it work for sleepovers? Very tempting.

Hyper Japan would be so up her street - dh is keen too!

Had never heard of Copic pens - will add them to my Amazon list. Fab ideas...

I was the same with my dd who is also 13, decided on an istax 9 instant camera. Just hoping she likes it xmas day x

Blogwoman · 02/11/2017 07:30

The bed could be great, couldn’t it? Got them “wow” factor! My DH has been to HyperJapan a couple of times with DD & both loved it. Copic markers can be bought in packs or singly - I haven’t checked online but aside from Amazon possibilities try art suppliers like Cass Art (shops in a few places plus online).
