Dessert/pudding on Cristmas Day that's not Christmas Pudding

KingLooieCatz · 29/10/2017 10:01

What do people do if they don't do Christmas Pudding or trifle?

We very rarely make any pudding/dessert at all. We haven't hosted Christmas for a long time but will be this year. Don't think a banana and a frozen tube of yoghurt is appropriate.

Any ideas?

We're competent in the kitchen. There will be 5 people eating, including MIL and FIL who do not have adventurous tastes.

Hey folks i m a newbie.lol you cant beat m and s profiteroles yum but its so annoying when no one else wants pudding when you do.and youve to patiently wait I.e. sulk

WhoKn0wsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 29/10/2017 22:22

We tend to just do ice cream too, no one is all that bothered about Christmas pudding, some actively hate it and only two out of 6 of us will eat trifle. I won't eat any pudding with alcohol in it. In the past I have done orange meringue pie, cheesecake and chocolate log (not all the same year) but we aren't big pudding eaters and lots gets wasted so I stopped bothering.

ladymariner · 30/10/2017 19:32

I have a Christmas pudding (Lidl's best one is gorgeous) a trifle, and I make Jamie's bread and butter panettone....soooo nice! And lovely cold too, with clotted cream, just in case there weren't enough calories in the pudding itself!! Grin

goose1964 · 30/10/2017 20:59

Mum always made chocolate mousse. I've made Christmas pudding ice-cream , it's a cinnamon ice cream with marinated dried fruit in it frozen I a pudding basin ( think it's one of Delia's)

Waitingforsherlock · 30/10/2017 21:08

I made Jamie Oliver's banoffee baked Alaska last year, it was delicious. I made as much of it ahead as I could and then whipped up the meringue after the main course. The recipe is for Italian meringue but I made the ordinary version. It was lovely and a bit of a show stopper too. Think the recipe is on his YouTube channel.

Nigella Yule Log and Xmas Pud here, flipping awesome.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/10/2017 22:22

Nigella’s Clementine cake is delicious - you simmer clementines for two hours, let them cool and give them a bit of a squeeze to get rid of a bit of excess water. Then blitz them in a food processor, add ground almonds, sugar and eggs, blitz again, then bake in a round cake tin for about an hour.

You can make it a day or two ahead - it keeps pretty well - and serve with whipped cream. It is a dense, moist cake that is utterly gorgeous - and clementines are very Christmassy.

Chocolate cake

juliantortoise · 30/10/2017 22:43

May sound weird but we love Summer Pudding! Really light after all the Christmas Lunch pieces.

KingLooieCatz · 31/10/2017 12:46

I'm not allowed to do a chocolate mousse.

Not after what happened last time.

I was a bit taken aback by the 60 replies there! I was happy at Crème Brulee, and looked up a top rated recipe on BBC Good Food. I was all set to go with that but now I've come back and read about plum and amaretto things and even banoffee coming into play.

I think I did a sticky toffee pudding last time we did a CD, aeons ago.

Clearly, whatever we decide is going to have to be trialled in advance, just to make sure the recipe works. We may have to trial several puddings in order to make an informed decision.

I may have to do extra cycling or Wii Fit if I want to fit into my clothes by Christmas.

My heart bleeds for you and your family, as you go through such a hard time! WinkGrin

I am sure any MNers local to you would be willing to sacrifice themselves and help with this hard task. I know I would!! Grin

TonicAndTonic · 31/10/2017 13:29

PILs do trifle I hate trifle though

thepatchworkcat · 31/10/2017 13:31

DH’s relative does profiteroles every year, yum

LellyM · 31/10/2017 14:33

I intend to make a pavlova with home made lime curd and cream.

It is tricky in our house:

I can't stand Christmas pud
DH cant touch alcohol and hates lemon and chocolate
DM has IBS
DF is fussy!

A1Sharon · 01/11/2017 07:30

Queen of Puddings.
Yum!

JingsMahBucket · 01/11/2017 08:39

@VampireLatteDrinker your chocolate hazelnut trifle sounds perfect for us. Thank you for the idea.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/11/2017 11:55

It does sound gorgeous, @JingsMahBucket - I have a bottle of Baileys espresso cream liqueur - it would work very nicely with that.

Fauchelevent · 01/11/2017 11:57

Panettone with hot chocolate maybe?

SocMcDuffin · 01/11/2017 12:39

I'm not a fan of Birds trifle but I make my own with each element made from scratch and it's to die for. Bonus is that it can be prepared ahead and it's one less course for me to worry about.

I get a single-serve pudding or two and a carton of ready made custard just to have in the house. Rarely eaten though but the one year you don't have it in is the year you get asked for it! Hmm

millifiori · 01/11/2017 13:29

I do Mary Berry's chocolate and berry roulade and/or a chocolate yule log, mince pies and trifle. They all get eaten.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 01/11/2017 13:32

I make a huge chocolate gateau thing covered with maltesers which looks like a Christmas pudding like this but I do a dulce de leche cream in the middle. Seems to be universally popular as the extended family always ask if I'm going to make it again each year...

JingsMahBucket · 01/11/2017 18:21

@SDTG M & S have a nice house brand Bailey's-type of liqueur that my partner likes. It's pretty solid and not too expensive either, cheaper than Bailey's. I'll pick up a new bottle next time I'm near an M & S. OH just finished the last bit of it yesterday night :)

I do this but with amaretto instead of whisky

Troubleinstore · 01/11/2017 18:41

Pressed too soon...Amaretto Pannetone bread and butter pudding...to die for!

Figgygal · 01/11/2017 18:43

Total throwback to childhood but I always insist on a vienetta (even though they are in reality pretty minging)
