Dessert/pudding on Cristmas Day that's not Christmas Pudding

What do people do if they don't do Christmas Pudding or trifle?

We very rarely make any pudding/dessert at all. We haven't hosted Christmas for a long time but will be this year. Don't think a banana and a frozen tube of yoghurt is appropriate.

Any ideas?

We're competent in the kitchen. There will be 5 people eating, including MIL and FIL who do not have adventurous tastes.

I second the mincemeat ice cream! I would heat up the mincemeat, though, and serve it as a topping for the ice cream.

We have a trifle on Christmas Eve and if we have family over there will be apple pie/apple crumble too.

I'm not doing a Christmas Pudding this year (it doesn;t get eaten TBH) maybe a steamed syrup pudding with ice cream.

Banoffi Pie is good , make up ahead .

DH doesn't eat chocolate but DD like chocolate brownies (ice cream, chocolate sauce )

Last year I made a lemon torte (pastry base , filling made from eggs, cream, lemon, sugar then baked) . It was vile, like a gelatinous congealed mass. Can't remember where I got the recipe from (magazine , I had the page on the fridge for ages) . Not worth it Xmas Sad .
I would buy one in future .
Lemon torte with a sharp sauce (raspberry or passionfruit) is lush.

webhave Christmas chocolate log and ice cream or cream 😀

SoftSheen · 29/10/2017 20:30

Try an ice cream bombe. This Jamie Oliver recipe tastes good and is nicely festive.

Discombobulated42 · 29/10/2017 20:31

Pavlova with cream, mango, kiwi and pomegranate. We have Christmas pudding on Boxing day after the cold cuts.

VampireLatteDrinker · 29/10/2017 20:35

I make boozy chocolate hazelnut trifle. I hate fruity, jammy trifles with madeira cake. Mine has chocolate sponge (from a mix) drizzle Frangelico (kahlua would also work as would baileys) then layer with whip cream and so forth until you get to the top where you add chocolate shavings. Set in the fridge for a day and it's the bee's knees!

A yule log and a trifle

GreenTulips · 29/10/2017 20:40

Has to be triful, one bowl all have spoons - TMI

Yogagirl123 · 29/10/2017 20:40

Sticky Toffee Pudding, the best pudding of all time!

FridgeCut · 29/10/2017 20:46

Apple crumble, I will be making it tomorrow and freezing it. My kids can't have dairy so it is an easy win and they adore it.

Piffpaffpoff · 29/10/2017 20:50

Chocolate meringue roulade or a pavlova of some sort. Can be made the day before then assembled on Christmas morning.

Piffpaffpoff · 29/10/2017 20:53

Edinburgh you say? Ice cream cake from Luca’s then....

SurfaceThroughTheWaves · 29/10/2017 20:56

We have Orange Ginger Mess.
Layer of bashed up ginger biscuits, layer of drained tinned mandarins, with a couple of tablespoons of the juice spooned on, layer of 50:50 mix of Greek yoghurt and cream and repeat.
Leave in fridge overnight, the biscuits soak up the orange juice and go soft and lovely.
Also it's no cook, takes about 15 mins is and make the day before so much less fucking around. Also you get to bash biscuits with a rolling pin, just in case you're finding Christmas stressful 😂

Composteleana · 29/10/2017 20:56

I do a lighter one e.g. Clementine and prosecco jellies:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/896661/clementine-and-prosecco-jellies
Though I’ll be honest and admit that after the first few times I stopped bothering squeezing a billion bloody clementines and just used a carton of juice - think Sainsbury’s do a clementine one around Christmas anyway.

And then I’ll do a more indulgent one, Baileys and chocolate cheesecake or chocolate orange cheesecake usually.

MIL makes a trifle though and although it’s not generally my favourite, there’s something about it just says Christmas to me.

CakeNinja · 29/10/2017 21:00

Mil makes Delia's chocolate torte which has brandy in it and amaretti biscuits crushed on top.
It's my favourite, everyone claims it's very rich and can only have a wafer thin slice - bonus, they are all liars, it means I get to have a very large slice 😂
To be fair, there is also a Christmas pud and usually some kind of meringue type thing on offer aswell which most of them have aswell, i stick with the torte. Heaven.

RaeCJ82 · 29/10/2017 21:01

Vampire, your trifle sounds amazing!

Hogtini · 29/10/2017 21:04

Chocolate orange cheesecake. Aldi used to do an amazing one in the frozen section.

Hassled · 29/10/2017 21:06

We have the traditional Christmas Pavlova (it's actually a pretty bog standard pavlova) for the non-pudding nutters eaters. You can do the meringue bit a couple of days before, you can whip the cream the day before and defrost some frozen fruit - it's dead easy.

RippleEffects · 29/10/2017 21:06

I do a tiered cake stand with berry fruits, chocolates (often make fresh cream truffles and the odd alcoholic one), cheeses cut into small wedges, cheese biscuits, christmas cake and nuts

Its all prep in advance and nice to nibble at over the post dinner hours sat debating.

JetCityWoman · 29/10/2017 21:12

Black forest style yule log.

make a chocolate swiss roll, stuff with cherry jam one from lidl is excellent, a few boozy brand cherry halves, vanilla flavoured whipped cream, roll up and dress the top with chocolate curls.

TheScottishPlay · 29/10/2017 21:16

I always do Hairy Bikers Mud Pie. I started to do it as DS didn't like trifle when he was small.

Natsku · 29/10/2017 21:20

Growing up we always had as much ice cream as you can eat for pudding at Christmas - looked forward to that all year! Mum would ball up several different ice cream flavours onto a big serving dish and there would be berries to go with it as well.

allthingsred · 29/10/2017 21:21

Ooh any chance of the recipe for the white choc & ameretto trifle. It sounds yummy

Taffeta · 29/10/2017 21:24

I love the tiered cake stand idea Ripple - I’m nicking that

myrtleWilson · 29/10/2017 21:27

We're not a pudding family so don't bother often (but give me the cheese - all the cheese!) But we have made Nigella's plum crumble with amaretti topping. -its from Nigellisima but the recipe is www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/ruby-red_plum_and_83013

The red plums are suitably festive in colour and the amaretti biscuit topping add a nice touch!
