Please recommend me a kids tablet

I have an 8 and 5 year old, and I'm torn as to which tablet to buy them for Christmas. These will be their first tablets.

The 5yo will likely protest if the (more tech savvy, 'older') 8yo gets a more advanced tablet, so will need to get them the same one.

I've looked at kindle fire for kids, but it seems it's not compatible/does not allow most android apps. That would have been my first choice.

I bought ds3 a hudl when they first came out. (I think 3 Christmases ago). It developed a fault within 6 months and Tesco replaced it with a refurbished one which also developed a fault so I cracked and bought an iPad mini which is still going strong however they are a bit pricey especially as you need two.

My dc got Kindle Fires for Christmas last year and they have been a bit hit. So far they have been able to play the games they like on them (mainly Roblox and Minecraft). They were great value and have had plenty of use.
I know mine would love Ipads but they are just beyond out budget.
DD1 thought that she would feel left out when her friends have Ipads and she doesn't but they only thing her friends do differently is Facetime which I wouldn't have allowed DD to do anyway.

DS has had a Kindle Fire for 3 years and it is a bit limited. Rubbish memory and far fewer apps. TBH he much prefers my old Samsung phone (with no sim) that I recently gave him as a stop gap.

He is being upgraded to an ipad this Christmas. Offered him the mini but he would prefer a 9.7, which suits me as it is cheaper.

If you Google how to add Google Play to an Amazon Fire tablet there are plenty of online tutorials on how to do it - then you can use it like any other Android tablet.

Pink would that be the Kindle fire or the one aimed at kids? I might consider getting the former and activate the parental controls. Would also need to somehow install Google play on to it.

TheDuchess wouldn't that void the warranty? Looked it up and it seems quite complicated to do.

Also worth noting my DC are hard handed, so will need to have a good warranty and protective casing.

We bought an Amazon Fire from John Lewis - the 16gb model and not the 'kids' one for our 5 year old last year. We bought a separate cover for it. It's been fantastic! It has thorough parental controls, and we have had no problem downloading the various apps / games she has asked for. We've been really impressed by the aftercare service too - DD damaged the charging point so we took it into John Lewis hoping they would still repair it. We didn't realise it had a two year guarantee and they replaced the whole unit and gave us a new two year guarantee.

We didn't buy the one in the kid's bundle as we are not in the UK so can't access much of the content, just the basic model, cheap on Black Friday.

I'm terrible with all things the techno but following advice from another thread this year bought dd1 6 a kindle fire and its really easy to set parental controls and she was thrilled with it.

We are based in Sweden and my 10 year old twins have kindles. We had them.sent to my mum in the UK and she forwarded them on. They use them for mainly minecraft, Roblox and musically. I have parental controls, so th et have to ask me to download anything. Almost daily I get asked 'mum can I downloaded........' 'is it free?' There are hundreds of free apps and games.
