Bakewell Tart for Christmas Day pudding

VampireSugarAndCorpseSpice · 23/10/2017 23:09

DM is hosting me, DH and DCsx2 for Christmas. She's phoned to say that she has ordered a family size Bakewell Tart instead of "that Christmas Pudding crap" for The Big Day. Inside I'm crying. This is so wrong. So very wrong.

I hate Bakewell Tart. I might have to smuggle in two small microwaveable Christmas Puds anyway. it's what Santa would have wanted

Actually @TwitterQueen that might be the answer. We LOVE trifle but it's normally a Boxing Day thing.

But no jelly.

I'm doing a pecan pie, chocolate fondue (for the kids mostly they will love it) and a small pudding for my dad and me to have a little bit. It will be shop bought Shock (the pudding that is, not the pecan pie which will be made without corn syrup Halo)

TwitterQueen1 · 24/10/2017 18:18

yeah... I'll give you the jelly. Not mad keen myself actually. maybe just more cream? And I don't really like custard either. Someone give me a posh recipe pls.

Rainshowers · 24/10/2017 18:31

We usually have two deserts - Christmas pudding and an alternative chocolate choice. I love Christmas pudding, I think I'd offer to bring one along because when else do you get a chance to eat it?!

I prefer a bakewell pudding to a tart. Hadn't thought of it as something to have on Christmas Day, but I'm not a fan of Christmas pudding personally.

VampireSugarAndCorpseSpice · 24/10/2017 19:18

Posh trifle:

Sandwich together Langue du chat biscuits with jam and put in the bottom of a crystal bowl
Soak in FINO sherry
Next day pour over a carton of bird's ready made custard. Homemade custard won't work with this.
Whip double cream until it's peaked and then gradually fold in more sherry. Spread over custard.

NO sprinkles.
NO silver balls.

Maybe decorate with frosted holly or something.

Absolutely never use the Birds trifle mix with fake cream. No jelly. No hundreds & thousands.

You can thank me later.

Noooo, trifle is even worse than Christmas pudding! Cranberry or mincemeat Bakewell gets my vote.

Seriously though, sounds as though there's a lot more to this than a pudding choice, I hope you can arrive at a compromise to keep you all happy.

Bettercallsaul1 · 24/10/2017 19:29

Where's the fruit, Vampire?!! There should be a layer of fresh raspberries on top of the sponge. also you can use home-made custard a-la Delia Smith recipe Grin

Floralnomad · 24/10/2017 19:31

We always have a selection of puddings on Christmas Day generally Christmas pudding , trifle , cheesecake or various ice cream .

choli · 24/10/2017 19:33

I'm glad that here in the US we don't feel obliged to stick to a rigid Christmas Dinner menu. Families just have what they like for dinner. If you don't like turkey, no turkey. Certainly there is no concept of what MUST be had for dessert.

Bettercallsaul1 · 24/10/2017 20:12

Thanksgiving is usually turkey, though, isn't it, choli, with pumpkin pie etc.

VampireSugarAndCorpseSpice · 24/10/2017 20:34

Oh yes. Sorry! But thinned raspberries Wink

choli · 24/10/2017 20:42

Thanksgiving is usually turkey, which is probably why it is not popular at Christmas. Desert does not have to be pumpkin or pecan pie though, it is not as rigid. Which is just as well, as I detest both of those pies. In fact, I hate all the "pumpkin spice" things that are everywhere at this time of year.

We don't do the turkey thing as my OH is vegetarian.

MadamMinacious · 24/10/2017 21:07

My DM is borderline anorexic and doesn't like other people eating food either. She will be vocal about her displeasure of two puds

Oh Vampire that sounds miserable. I hope you do get your Christmas pudding. I can't stand people who police others food like that.

MadamMinacious · 24/10/2017 21:08

... but trifle is the devil's pudding

NoWordForFluffy · 24/10/2017 22:48

Soggy sponge is wrong on so many levels!

millifiori · 24/10/2017 22:55

On Christmas Day everyone must have exactly what they want for pudding. That's our rule. So DH and I have christmas pudding. he has it with brandy butter (boak) and I have it with greek yoghurt (weird) because that's what we always had at home. DC have chocolate log and DF-i-L has gluten free roulade.
Bring some christmas puddings. They take seconds to heat up in microwave if they're pre-boiled.

millifiori · 24/10/2017 22:58

Vampire - that trifle's a bit basic for me, sorry. It needs to be Langue du chat biscuits (agreed) Soaked in fino (agreed) but then with a layer of really lovely fruit - raspberries, strawberries, cherries etc held in place in raspberry jelly with fresh whipped cream and grated dark chocolate and toasted flaked almonds on top. That's Christmas trifle.

Bettercallsaul1 · 24/10/2017 23:17

But there's no custard there, millifiori! There must be a layer of custard over the fruit!

millifiori · 24/10/2017 23:34

Oh duh. My mistake. Custard after jelly before cream. Home made or Waitrose own fresh custard.

VampireSugarAndCorpseSpice · 24/10/2017 23:41

It's harder than it looks isn't it @milifiori ? 😆😂😂

VampireSugarAndCorpseSpice · 24/10/2017 23:44

Thank you @madamminacious yes, it is a bit.

PUD-U-LIKE sounds a brilliant idea I'll do a family straw poll and hide the Vienetta in the freezer.

Bettercallsaul1 · 25/10/2017 00:44

Agree with millifiori upthread that everyone should get their just desserts.
