ideas for teenagers

I am trying to find something related to engineering; the Lego mindstorm kits would be ideal but they are way outside my budget.

My nephew is really into aeronautical engineering and bridges and loves to build things.

Look at Thames & Kosmos, Great Gizmos and LittleBits

Fischertechnik do some good sets that he might like, still expensive but maybe one of the smaller sets might suit. Its a bit of a change from Lego. There are also the lego architecture sets but they tend to be more asthetically pleasing but not necessairly very challenging.
