This thread is for Christmas 'snobs'.
Proud to be one. 🎩🎅
So if you're not a fan of elf on the shelf or excessive mountains of tat this is where you can hang out and be safe from discussion of boots 3 for 2 gift sets.

It's definitely not a money thing.

Plastic tat costs a shitload more than a trip out to the ballet

2014newme · 21/10/2017 12:48

Exactly, plenty of people spend thousands on Xmas piles of stuff and even get into debt for it. Spending hundreds or even thousands on 'bargains' is an irony.
Fresh greenery, Carol services, church, winter walks are all free.
To me, Christmas is not about how much money you spend or competitive gift giving.

What’s a North Pole breakfast? Sounds like I might like it

It's a special breakfast either at the start of December or on Christmas eve or morning. You lay the table decoratively and have some sort of treat breakfast like waffles or pancakes and fruit salad. And probably hot chocolate. It may or may not be connected to the arrival/departure of the Elf (or similar). If it's at the start of December children may receive their advent calendars with breakfast.

I have to say, of all the new 'traditions' this is my absolute favourite. We did it on Christmas eve 2 years ago and it was the absolute nicest time. Our Christmas time is extremely busy and this was just taking a fantastic chilled out hour or so to sit together over breakfast and chat about the excitement of the following day. It was lovely so magical and restful.

PodgeBod · 21/10/2017 12:55

Thanks Sharon some of those are very lovely. It's a shame about the rocking horse it was very pretty.

That's one scary ornament!

Craftsy, sounds like the elves main food groups Smile it’s crap that I don’t have room for a dining table in our flat, some of the decorations for the breakfast on google look so good! Maybe I could get a small coffee table & see if it has the same effect Grin

JonSnowsWhore · 21/10/2017 13:18

I don’t quite know what Liberty are thinking with that one 😂 I agree with you though the beehive one is beautiful

2014newme · 21/10/2017 13:19

North pole breakfasts seem to involve a lot of candy canes

OP posts:
JonSnowsWhore · 21/10/2017 13:21

Because, 2014, candy canes are one of the elves 4 main food groups...

CiderwithBuda · 21/10/2017 13:35

Ok I'm not a snob although hate blue lights and the Elf. I love the Poncetastic threads but am rubbish at crafting so tend to buy in my ponce. On the back of this thread and thanks to LaurieFairyCakes I had a look at the Fortnum's website. (If anyone wants to see expensive decorations have a look there.) Anyway - I've just ordered an orange and ginger Christmas cake, some chocolate and sour cherry mince pies and various chutneys, preserves and Christmas spiced biscuits. And an expensive tree decoration - vintage post box - to take to a friend in Australia. Some of the chutneys etc are also presents. Thanks Laurie! DH not so happy but I'm sure he will love it all really!

I'll still have my Ferrero Roche though. And a box of Celebrations. And my tree is not real after the year of the real tree that shed horribly.

NextInLine · 21/10/2017 15:00

My Christmas is too tacky for this thread, but I need to know what a norad is, so I can add it to my things to do list.

ItsBouquetBUCKET · 21/10/2017 15:06

NORAD is the North American Aerospace Defense Command they track Santa at Christmas as he travels delivering gifts www.noradsanta.org/ Grin

Andylion · 21/10/2017 15:18

Do most Christmas snobs prefer white lights? I never have a tree anymore, and we’re not allowed to decorate our balconies, but if I did either, I would have coloured lights.
Are these preferences, apart from the obvious aversion to plastic, based on images of Victorian Christmases? The white lights are closest to actual candles?

In my first Christmas, in my first flat, I had a ragtag collection of decorations that my grandmother had used. I added to them my own huge haul of freshly minted crap purchased at Walmart. It was all I could afford.

MrsHathaway · 21/10/2017 15:28

dd1 has Harry potter mauraders map this year, it's heat changing and she will love it

Ooh. Um. Where from? Asking for a friend.

Stubble - I'm ex-Halle myself and can confirm it's as fun from the stage as the audience. 100% snobby Christmas fabulous. The first time we went as audience I remembered to take my orchestral sleigh bells ...

I'm a visitor here from Poncetastic. I think there's an enormous overlap, the crucial difference being whether you buy your naice things (snobs) or make them (ponces).

2014newme · 21/10/2017 15:31

I make a lot, all my own wreaths and floral arrangements I make them as gifts as well. But I don't love cooking.

OP posts:
endehors · 21/10/2017 15:31

I'm far too tacky for this thread but I'd love to know where Whisky2014 buys tree baubles for £50 a pop

The snob in me thinks that's very vulgar, and especially the need to tell us the cost Wink

MrsHathaway · 21/10/2017 15:32

You're a closet ponce, OP!

endehors · 21/10/2017 15:38

No, it's not a money thing, poppl. There's usually a bit of virtue signalling, especially of the anti materialism variety, on these threads. Quite amusing. Grin

2014newme · 21/10/2017 15:44

Oh goodness yes I love a ponce. But floristry is as far as it goes. I've done the hyacinths the Sarah craven forced narcissi etc.
But I could never be interested in making a mince pie
😂

OP posts:
LosingMyWay · 21/10/2017 15:59

I reckon so andy or maybe an edwardian or dickensian feel.

poppl · 21/10/2017 16:04

I used to ponce as well as snob, but now there's only two of us plus we usually travel for Christmas so it all seems a bit pointless.

I love all the getting ready in October, carefully tending the Christmas cake, picking sweet chestnuts and sloes, making game pie and my own mincemeat. Lots of yummy things in jars.

LosingMyWay · 21/10/2017 17:00

poppl I've always despised having anything to do with christmas until actual december, but over the past couple years my poncyness has increased and I have realised that it is impossible to start poncing or ponce properly in december. Totally has to be October.

poppl · 21/10/2017 17:21

It's dictated by the seasons and I love that. Once the days get shorter and colder, traditionally everyone would have been out gathering the last of the fruit for the winter months.

It's a massive effort though, so only Christmas really makes it worth it.
