What type lego for 3yo 9mths

My son doesn’t have any lego sets yet- just building blocks.
I have never bought lego yet as his sisters never had an interest.
Duplo is 3+ but think might be a bit too basic, and he won’t get long out of it- he is very able and past the stage of putting small parts in his mouth
But can’t really see a set or range that I think would be suitable?

If I were to buy lego friends set for 8.6yo and 6.5yo girls what is recommended also

Look at the Lego juniors sets, they are simple builds but are regular Lego so will mix in fine with more complex stuff as he gets older and his collection grows. Could also just get a box of bricks for creative play.

My son is a similar age and there is lego at my mums left over from my brothers. I find he gets a bit frustrated with it

We got DS Lego juniors fire and construction sets last Christmas at 3.5 he needed abit of help with the instructions but the peices are easier we got normal Lego 6+?for his 4th birthday he's getting really good at building things and following the instructions on his own on some of the smaller sets. I'd get some Lego juniors or smaller car sets and a box of random bricks to build whatever with

I’d go for this kind of thing, it comes with ideas but nothing too intricate to follow, and plenty of scope for using their own imagination;

Lego juniors would probably be the best idea to start off with. My ds started getting into lego at the same age and could follow basic instructions but I still ended up building most things. He did however play with his models without breaking them.

I don't think Duplo would be too young for him. My 8yr old Lego enthusiast still builds with her brothers Duplo, they make all sorts of things, and because the bricks are bigger, houses/zoos/jungles etc. can be lived in by all the toys that join in.

We bought normal Lego for ds when he was 4 and it was a mistake. He couldn’t pull it apart at times and constantly needed help with it and it turned him off Lego for a while.

He loved his duplo until he was 5. It also has great resell value so still worth it, or pick some up second hand so he can make bigger structures

Mega blocks or junior sets. Lego will be to much faff and you can’t look away for a second.

If you’re willing to help, then Lego juniors is nice, but I’d still get some duplo, so he can build it himself. Get a baseplate too.

My 5.5 year old and 3.9 year old are massively into duplo still.

We tried some Lego juniors but it’s not as good for building I don’t think. Much more intricate. We are staying with duplo for longer.

Duplo won't be too basic, and as he can build it himself, he'll get a sense of achievement.
If you want to be involved with the building, lego junior would be ok.

I mistakenly bought regular lego last Christmas my boys were almost 3+4, when I saw the age recommendation on the box I thought damn,however the 3 year old absolutely loved it and it's his most played with thing now and he's going to be 4 in Jan.
We have a mixture of general lego and some sets mixed in.
I would say it's the best buy if, as you say they are past the putting in mouth age.

I have still bought duplo for my 4 year old. We have tried him on Lego and he still needs a lot of help with it and bits get lost. I think it does depend on the child.

My 3.5 and 7 year olds still play with duplo every day despite having loads of Lego too. 3 yo is getting a duplo set for Christmas.

Stick with Duplo.

Duplo is great. My 3.5 year old loves it. And his 6 and 8 year old cousins both play with it when they visit.

My 5yo plays longer and more imaginatively with duplo than lego

Lego Junior age 4-7. He will soon outgrow Duplo.

For the 6 and 8 year old girls, the Lego Friends car and caravan set is nice.

DD is 4 tomorrow and she plays with the Lego Friends stuff (I think it’s age 5-8). She still likes Duplo too but prefers Lego. She’s got the Lego Friends swimming pool for her birthday.

My 3.3 yo DS loves proper Lego and can build some of the little Lego City cars without assistance now (it's taken him about 3-5 months to get to that stage). 4.4 yo DD also likes Lego City. They also both like Lego Juniors. DUPLO would be a bit basic for both of them now. Each child is obviously different though.

Mine play with both together. Aged 8 and 5. They love the independence and success they get with Duplo. The older one plays well with Lego now and the younger one is obsessed with collecting it but doesn’t rebuild yet.

My 3 yo ds loves the Lego duplo big green box set his big brother and sister had. They love playing with it with him still at 8&10.

My mum is getting him the Lego duplo train set and cars and airport set for Christmas. They'll mix in well with the big set, but add a bit of interest

Dd is 8 and the last couple of years has absolutely loved the Lego friends range (be warned, its huge and still growing!) she has the house, the bus, the grand hotel and a shop I think. She's also loved some of the Disney Lego, Cinderella castle, frozen castle.

My boys age 4 and 7 still love duplo. It is quick to built. They love building really tall towers, zoos/farms, and my seven year old builds big symmetrical structures and things like the i360. My older boy also loves older lego sets for following the instructions then having the models, amd he does create his own vehicles. The younger one now asks for older lego, but this is mainly because he wants what his brother has. But in terms of fun, creative play, at speed, duplo is still brilliant at their ages.

Mine played with duplo until the youngest was 9.

No bits to stand on, can build stuff really quick, makes great homes for non Lego stuff an so on.

We bought a lot of basic bricks 2nd hand, very well played with over the years.
