Smartwatch - what are they used for?

OK so I am a bit clueless about smartwatches. I am looking for ideas for DD2 who is almost 11 and smartwatches keep coming up but I don't know what they do or whether they are worth it.

Can anyone help me on this? Also kids fitness trackers, they run around like loons anyway but I think they would enjoy recording it.

DH has the pebble smart watch. He uses it as a step tracker, and for the notifications (text, call, email) when he is at work but can't have his phone out. It lets him reply to texts via the watch, and links to his Bluetooth in the car when he is driving so the phone stays in his pocket. They're useful for adults but I can't really see what an 11 year old would use it for (I imagine he wouldn't be allowed in in school) - if it's the fitness bit you're interested in then maybe a fitbit would be better?

Smartwatches are basically another point to view your phone from or give you phone notifications. They also track steps and heart rate etc.
They vary a lot so best to look at an overview article like this one:

Good luck!
