Ideas for a new baby at Christmas

We will have a new niece or nephew who is due to be born a few weeks before Christmas. I'm wondering what to buy the baby - obviously he/she won't care but it will be nice for the parents to have something to open. Budget is up to £50. Happy to get either s keepsake or something fun or useful.

A personalised bauble.
A travel blackout blind was the most useful present we got.
Also sock ons.

An heirloom book - like a nicely illustrated AA Milne or Beatrix Potter or similar collection?

Have the parents said anything about what they would like?

Think ahead to anytime within the 12 months before next Christmas - so a walker, stacking toys, stuff like that - and then get a good quality version of one of those (nice wooden set, or proper hard wearing set like Fisher Price or similar, in nice bright colours). Especially anything that can have multiple uses.

Books - some baby board books that the baby will be able to chew and fling around read when s/he's old enough, and a lovely harback storybook for the parents to read to her/him. (eg The Fox And The Star.)

Don't get the really huge "heirloom" classic story books because they are a pain to handle as too big, and so never actually get cracked open.

mothercare vouchers, probably most useful.
and yes, think ahead. Next year's winter jacket?

Some lovely muslin squares (boden?)
A tree ornament with the year on it and his/her name (not a naff “baby’s first Xmas one though!!!)
A light up Christmas thing? Babies like lights...

Someone bought us the puffin baby and toddler treasury which my two loved, it’s nice enough to be a nice gift but not too posh to read over and over iyswim. Also wooden blocks or a toy that can be attached to a buggy would be good.

Playmat, bouncer, swing? If they haven't already got them or Toys for 6 months+ stacking cups, push walker, shape sorter, board books?

Any baby toy.
Baby gym, rattle, jumperoo if budget will stretch, shape sorter, lazmaze toy, board books, oball actual ball or car, swim seat thing for the pool.

I wouldn't get excited about "things to keep" but baby will need toys before next Christmas.
