DS has been playing minecraft on the PC for the last few months and I'm considering getting a console for Christmas.
His friends are evenly divided between xboxes and playstations so I'll probably just get whichever offers the best deal.

But are there different types of minecraft? There seems to be "super plus minecraft"
Confused story mode Hmm something about realms Hmm

Could someone please explain what I should buy?

Words of one syllable typed realllly slowwwly would help Blush

It's confusing right! I've had to learn this for my DS. There is actual minecraft, that you have on the PC or a console, the one you already have. Story mode is a completely different game and is more like an adventure game - no building at all, it's just set in the minecraft world with minecraft characters. Realms is a way of paying monthly to get a private world to play with friends online. I think!

Mine play normal Minecraft on the Xbox. DH is now addicted to it... Be warned!
It is a brilliant game though.

My dds (11 and 8) play Minecraft on Kindle fires. Its the Pocket Edition {not sure what that actually means}
They have Minecraft on the Wii U too but apparently only one of them can play at a time so they don't really bother with it.

More info please! D's is playing the Minecraft pocket edition because it is free on our tablet and he loves it. I can't seem to connect to other tablets, so he and his mate can visit each other's world's. Is this because it is free or because I am an ignoramus? Can he play a different version on tablet or does it have to be laptop or console in order to connect - we really don't want to get a console... sorry to crash your thread, op not really; I need help!

Crowdo · 25/09/2017 14:32

The main Minecraft is much bigger than the pocket edition. I don't like the pocket edition as it's a bit fiddly.

Just normal Minecraft on whatever console should be ok.

MrsW.
DS used to have PE on a tablet and he installed it on my phone so we could 'play together' - the joy! No idea how but it is possible, or was about 2 years ago anyway. I seem to remember writing down stuff from one device to type into the other. He was about 7 so I'd say he saw how to do it on YouTube.

Apileofballyhoo · 25/09/2017 14:49

OP there's the main minecraft you can buy for PC or console. There is also pocket edition for handheld devices. But just to confuse you and me further, since this weekend there seems to be pocket edition for X-box at least. DS was very excited about it. I don't know what it's called but because DS already had downloaded Minecraft he got this new thing for free.

Superplus seems to be additional features rather than anything else. They call the way different characters can look 'skins' and different graphics 'texture packs'. It's just a way for Microsoft to make more money without doing anything to develop the game. So your characters can look like the Simpsons or Star Wars or whatever. Like Lego merchandise.

Pocket edition has just been updated and works with the console ones now. My boys play PE together on tablets. I think it's easy to connect if you are on the same wifi. If you want to multiplayer at a distance you need a server to host.

Annwithnoe · 25/09/2017 15:25

Welcome Mrs Wooster! The more the merrier! (I don't really want to get a console yet either!)

Thanks for the explanations everyone. I can feel my mind actually bending Grin

MrsWooster - DS can only connect to other worlds when playing pocket edition on his iPad when they are on the same wifi network.

I don't understand minecraft at all, but DS appears to have amassed a vast knowledge, mostly from YouTube! I get proffered pocket money for new skins periodically. Whatever they are.

Fluffysparks · 25/09/2017 17:21

Friends have bought an xBox after a PlayStation but we've (I say we) always been happy with xBox? That is the extent of my knowledge Grin

GreenTulips · 25/09/2017 17:25

Pocket edition is just the name for a carry around game (tablet etc)

They have to be on the same network to connect

XBox is different as they can connect anywhere- must both have Xbox and the actual game to play together

Console depends on what his friends have - and you must paid for XBox live to connect to friends

Other than that it's a giant lego game

MrsWooster · 25/09/2017 20:24

Damn, I was hoping there was an easy answer! I did all the on the same network, link up things with our two tablets and it didn't seem to work.
I will have another go. Thanks for the info!

GreenTulips · 25/09/2017 21:52

did all the on the same network, link up things with our two tablet

This is where where youre going wrong.

Hand the tablet to any 6 year old and let them sort it out.
