I have always pit presents around the bottom of the tree but a lot of friends give their dc stockings and just thinking maybe this year get d's a stocking.

What do others do and why. Worried my tree will look bear without the presents

We do both Smile
Small toy (last year we got Dd a miniature Christmas teddy), a little book and a sweet treat in the stocking and then other presents in Santa sacks downstairs around the tree

PerspicaciaTick · 23/09/2017 21:54

Both. And a pillowcase of presents by the bed.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/09/2017 22:06

Both here.
Stocking was little things to keep them busy in the early hours (and we'd listen to them whispering thinking they were being really quiet ) Xmas Grin. We used to put a camp bed in DD room for DS so they both shared the excitement of Christmas morning.

Now they're older the stockings are still used but the gifts they get are smaller , more £ and still well wrapped.

I don't buy for adults , only the DC get presents.DC will be 18 and 15.6 so they like to have a lie-in and open their presents a bit later. We don't do the whole Watching&Filming them now.

My 2 have always had a pile each, on each sofa from us/Santa. The presents from everyone else stay under the tree. When they were young we used to film them opening 1 present each in turn. We haven't filmed them for about 8 years and they are 18 and 14 now but they still open a present at a time and take it in turns, as it's an ingrained habit now. Smile

Presents only that gradually appear under the tree in the lead up to Christmas

ilovetea14 · 24/09/2017 00:35

We do a sock at end of bed filled with sweets so that means Santa has been so can go downstairs. We do Santa sacks around the tree and stocking from Santa as well with more sweets and bottle of coke that mammy and daddy would never buy you :) we also do Christmas Eve boxes their from us with new pjs, toothbrush and wash set and sweets for our movie night.

When I was younger we had presents from Santa & our stocking on the couch, I think presents from friends & family were put under the tree but then "Santa" moved them to our pile. I'm 1 of 4 DC so all our presents wouldn't have been able to fit under the tree! Last year was my DS's 1st Christmas & I did the same, stocking & presents from Santa on the couch, but left friends & families under the tree & went through them after. I remember when I was younger I would open all the presents first then go through my stocking last, still do actually! For some reason it's my favourite part, even though usually it's just random things & chocolate!

We have a huge tree that touches the ceiling and is also quite low to the ground. We have plug in light up pressies around the bottom of the tree and no room for anything else! So the kids have stockings in their bedrooms which they open on our bed and an individual pile of pressies each downstairs. 🎗

I don't remember Christmas as a child, or if I got a stocking, which is quite weird, isn't it (I'm only 40!)? Not sure why I don't, but there you go. I do remember that satsumas are a definite part of Christmas, as are selection boxes (though I remember that we used to get a net selection 'box' in the shape of a stocking, so that may have been IT as it were!).

Anyway, fast forward to now and we do stockings and sacks of presents for the kids. I didn't put the stockings in the rooms last year, but will this year and the sacks are in the lounge on the sofas (a sofa each!).

We aren't at the presents under the tree in the build up stage yet; I'm not sure the kids have enough self control for that quite yet (4 and 3!). Maybe in a few years' time! 🎅🎄🎅🎄🎅🎄

Stockings in bed for all 3 of us.
Also presents around the tree. We like to have a big pile of presents at Christmas, but we don't do much for birthdays.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/09/2017 07:59

Both!

In our house it was always relatively little things in stockings - presents under the tree from family. Stocking at the end of the bed for when they wake up - other presents later - we always had to wait at least until after breakfast.

Purdyandwheezy · 24/09/2017 09:36

As a child we always had a stocking all all presents that my mum and dad bought on a sofa each from santa. Very few for us kids under the tree as we see all our family over the period. And stocking was just any of the presents that were small enough to fit in. I have done the same with DS so far but I love the idea of the stocking on the bed however...
What do you do if they are not reliable sleepers?? DS will always either come into our bed in the middle of the night or wake stupidly early and have to come in with us for a cuddle. I'm not sure how it would work. Also have your young children been ok with the idea of someone coming into their bedrooms in the night? DS only 3 and I don't know whether this will freak him out a bit.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/09/2017 09:44

DS still comes in with us too, Purdy. He's also 3.

I think he's OK with Santa coming into his room, though whether the thought of a stocking waiting for him will keep him in his own bed all night I've no idea! We will deal with that when we get to Christmas Eve / morning!

BeyondThePage · 24/09/2017 09:45

We never had "santa" as once the kids were old enough - 2/3 ish -to understand, MIL told them that he tweaked their noses to make sure they were asleep. Cue HUGE meltdown! HUGE! REALLY HUGE!!

We had to say - no that doesn't happen, he's not real (not prepared to lie to the kids when asked directly about some made up stuff). Still wanted to come into our bed "just in case". They are 15/16 now and I am only just coming round to forgiving her for that.

Bdayblues · 24/09/2017 09:45

We do both. Small stocking in bedroom with little things in (like socks, nail varnish, chocolate orange). Main presents are under the tree.

NotCitrus · 24/09/2017 10:23

Stockings go in front of the fireplace seeing as we have one, and purportedly are from Father Christmas, or nowadays Santa Yoda or whatever being ds has invented. Ideally there's stuff for the kids to play with until lunch, though sometimes we'll choose another they can open. Other stuff is umder the tree and opened after lunch and the compulsory walk that is a vital part of English culture (all grandparents have supported me in this one which is essential for calming down overexcited children!)
